How to Find and Use Bamboo Wood in Minecraft 1.20

A decade after the game’s launch, Minecraft has finally added the tenth type of wood to the game, and it’s truly unique. We’re talking about the brand new family of bamboo wood in Minecraft. They have a special crafting method and even some exclusive features. There is just no limit to your creativity when using bamboo wood. But first, it’s time to figure out how to find and use bamboo wood in Minecraft.

How to Find Bamboo Wood in Minecraft (2022)

Note: Currently, bamboo wood and its related items are only available as an experimental feature in Minecraft 1.20 Beta and Snapshot 22w46a. They are under development, and everything from the blocks’ texture to their uses is subject to change until the final release.

Bamboo wood is the tenth type of wood in the game and will be available to use for everyone in the Minecraft 1.20 update. It has a texture that looks similar to real-world dried bamboo. When compared to other wood types, bamboo feels fresh and unique. Instead of only being of a different color, the bamboo wood also has a long straight line across its face, which is great for making seamless patterns in Minecraft house builds.

Where Does Bamboo Wood Spawn

Unlike other wood types, bamboo wood isn’t obtained from any trees. Instead, you have to use pieces of bamboo, which are already a part of the game, to create the new blocks. So, bamboo wood blocks don’t spawn naturally in the world of Minecraft.

Meanwhile, as far as bamboo is concerned, you can find them growing inside larger jungle biomes. They take over small areas of jungles and turn them into bamboo jungles. This is also the biome where pandas most commonly spawn in Minecraft. If you want to be ruthless, you can kill Pandas to make them drop bamboo. However, we suggest using our sugar cane farm design to get a large amount of bamboo with ease.

How to Make Bamboo Wood in Minecraft

In Minecraft, all types of wood either come from wood or hyphae (fungus) log blocks. They generate naturally in the game’s world and can be turned into planks, which are further used to make all other items out of wood. But bamboo doesn’t spawn as a log in Minecraft. Instead, it grows as long sticks, just like in the real world.

To create a block of bamboo (that acts like a log), you have to combine nine pieces of bamboo on the crafting table. You need to fill out the crafting table completely to get bamboo wood, as shown below:

Once this block is ready, you can turn the bamboo block into planks. Otherwise, like other log blocks, you can also use an axe on the block of bamboo to turn it into a stripped block of bamboo.

How to Make Bamboo Wood Plank in Minecraft

The most basic element of any wood type is the plank block, and that’s where bamboo begins as well. So let’s look at the crafting recipe for the new bamboo wood plank block in Minecraft.

To create a bamboo plank block, you need to place a stripped or regular block of bamboo on the crafting table. Each block of bamboo gives two bamboo planks, which is half the number of planks you get from other wood logs. Expanding on that, you can get 128 bamboo planks from a full stack of bamboo blocks (64 items).

Though, in total, it costs you 576 pieces of bamboo to create these 128 bamboo planks, which now makes it the most expensive type of wood in Minecraft.

How to Use Bamboo Wood in Minecraft

Now that you know how to make bamboo plank, everything else is a piece of cake. You can use the bamboo wood in Minecraft to make the following items with existing wood recipes:

  • Stairs: crafted by placing six bamboo planks in a staircase pattern
  • Slab: crafted by placing three planks horizontally next to each other
  • Fence: created by surrounding two sticks with four bamboo planks
  • Fence Gate: created by reversing the arrangement of a fence’s recipe
  • Door: crafted by filling two adjacent columns with bamboo planks
  • Trapdoor: crafted by filling two adjacent rows with bamboo planks
  • Sign: created by filling two adjacent rows with bamboo planks and putting a stick below the middle cell
  • Button: crafted by placing a bamboo plank in the crafting area
  • Pressure Plate: created by placing two bamboo planks in adjacent columns
  • Raft: same crafting recipe as boats in Minecraft; crafted by combining 5 bamboo planks in a hollow semi-square
  • Raft With a Chest: a combination of a chest with a raft

Not to forget, bamboo wood also has a set of special exclusive blocks under the name of bamboo mosaics. So let’s look at how to make bamboo mosaic in the next section.

What is Bamboo Mosaic in Minecraft

The bamboo mosaic is a wooden building block that you can only craft using bamboo. It works like other building blocks in the wood family but has a continuously wrapped texture. Now, let’s go over the crafting of each bamboo mosaic block in Minecraft:

Bamboo Mosaic Block

1. First, we need to make bamboo slabs. For that, place three bamboo planks in the middle row (or any other row) to obtain six bamboo slabs.

2. Then, place two bamboo slabs vertically anywhere in the crafting area (see diagram below). Well, doing so will create a bamboo mosaic block.

Bamboo Mosaic Slabs

Once you have crafted the bamboo mosaic blocks, place three of them in the same row of a crafting table to create mosaic slabs. The crafting recipe is the same as the standard bamboo slabs, but you now get a new wood pattern. And it would look great while building a floor or entryway for your house.

Bamboo Mosaic Stair

Finally, let’s learn how you can use bamboo wood blocks to make stairs. Here, you need to fill the first, second, and last row of the crafting area with bamboo mosaic planks (as shown below) to create a bamboo mosaic stair. We love the new design that bamboo mosaic brings to the game, opening up new creative avenues for builds.

Is Bamboo Wood Better Than Other Wood Types?

Now that you know how to find and use bamboo wood in Minecraft, it’s natural for you to wonder if it’s worth all the effort.

During our testing, as expected, bamboo didn’t offer any special effects when compared to other types of wood in the game. They burn the same way, and they even work with the same crafting recipes, as you might have noticed. So yeah, it’s right to say that all its uniqueness lies simply in the bamboo wood set’s textures. They are nothing like the other wood types in Minecraft. Not to forget, you can even take them a step further by creating mosaic bamboo blocks.
