Over the years, Ghost of Tsushima has become one of the all-time favorite PlayStation games, thanks to its rich story and captivating gameplay in the feudal Japan setting. Ever since the game’s release on respective platforms, PS and PC gamers have been unitedly awaiting a sequel to this esteemed videogame by Sucker Punch Production.
Now that a new sequel titled “Ghost of Yotei” has been announced, you might be wondering why we did not get a direct sequel. So, read on to discover why Sucker Punch opted for Ghost of Yotei instead of Ghost of Tsushima 2.
Sucker Punch Has Moved on from Jin Sakai
Longtime fans who have been waiting for the return of Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima 2 would have been disappointed with Sucker Punch’s decision to go for an all-new origin story. But there is a good reason to move on from Jin Sakai. Andrew Goldfarb, the Senior Communications Manager of Sucker Punch Productions, emphasized why they have settled on a new adventure:
We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend.
As you can see above, the developers have stuck to the main theme of ” The Ghost” and wanted a completely new tale of another ghost in Feudal Japan. Fans who have completed the Ghost of Tsushima deep down know that Jin Sakai’s story and his character arc have come full circle. Moreover, the Iki Island DLC also tied up the loose ends and painted the complete picture of Jin’s tale.
Thus, they believed there was nothing more left to explore in Tsushima and retained the core theme to create the Ghost of Yōtei. They love to tell origin stories, and so this time they have introduced a female protagonist named Atsu. As the devs stated, you will continue to experience the main pillars of GOT, i.e., “playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.”
In case you missed it, Ghost of Yotei’s story takes place three centuries after the conclusion of Ghost of Tsushima. So, we can expect to see some references to Jin Sakai and so gear up for the Atsu’s ascendance to become the next Ghost of the franchise in the northern lands of Feudal Japan.
