In Short
  • Vault 24 was a piece of cut content from Fallout: New Vegas, only referenced on a Vault-Tec jumpsuit.
  • Episode one of Fallout Season 2 features the location in full detail and unveils its inhumane experiment.
  • In the show, Vault 24's American residents were brainwashed into becoming Communists using brain-manipulation techniques and devices.

Fallout Season 2 is finally here, folks, and it features a Megaton’s worth of callbacks, easter eggs, and references to the games. From the very first sequence of the show, the meticulous attention to detail is on full display. The creators are practically flexing their knowledge by having Robert House name-drop the H&H Tools Company and sneak a Radiation King van into the frame while making nothing of it.

The premiere makes it perfectly clear that the Amazon Prime production is authentically Fallout. With the license to make canonical decisions, the TV show is also throwing lore revelations left and right, and it has even restored a piece of cut content from Fallout: New Vegas. The content in question is Vault 24, whose 15-year-old mystery has finally been resolved.

During episode one’s middle stretch, we see the Ghoul and Lucy come across the Starlight Drive-In. While this is technically a location from Fallout 4, it seems like Starlight was a chain of drive-ins that also had outlets in the Mojave. Tucked behind this one’s projector screen is a cave that leads into Vault 24.

The only previous mention of the Vault was discovered deep in the files of Fallout: New Vegas. In them, players were only able to find a Vault 24 jumpsuit and learned nothing about the contents of the nuclear bunker. This meant that the location has forever been shrouded in mystery, until Fallout Season 2 finally revealed the inhumane experiments hiding inside.

As Lucy and the Ghoul explore the Vault, they come across skeletons wearing Communist outfits. This immediately amps up the intrigue as pre-war America in the Fallout universe was intensely anti-Communist. On exploring further, it is revealed that the Vault conducted brainwashing experiments on its red-blooded American residents, forcing the principles of Communism on them. As part of their efforts, Vault-Tec employees also used a mind-control device that could directly manipulate a person’s thoughts.

Experiments such as this are pretty standard for Vault-Tec. And if you’ve played the games, you’ll know that they can be even more cruel. Nevertheless, it’s great to see the TV show answer one of the franchise’s many mysteries. Now, will it finally give Fallout: New Vegas a proper ending? Only time will tell, although Jonathan Nolan did give us a solid hint.
