Elio Box Office Collection: Pixar’s Worst Performing Movie In a While

In Short
  • Pixar's Elio is finally available to watch in theatres, but given the reputation of the animation studio, the film hasn't been doing so well at the box office.
  • In its opening weekend, Elio has generated $21 million in business, while the expected earnings were at least $30 million.
  • On the other hand, 28 Years Later, which was released on the same day, made a $60 million debut on its opening weekend.

Elio follows an eleven-year-old orphan boy, Elio Solis, who lives with his Aunt Olga. He desperately wants to be kidnapped by the outwardly species, whom we know as Aliens. However, his dream comes true when these aliens mistake him for the leader of Earth and take him all the way up to their unique world called Communiverse. While the movie created a massive hype when the events were teased in the brief trailers, it seems the spark didn’t stick for too long. Elio’s box office collection has been a disappointing affair so far.

The initial projections of the film suggested that Elio would bag $30 million across 3,750 theaters in the debut weekend. However, it eventually ended up earning $21 million, which is the worst-ever opening of a Pixar film. This definitely wasn’t expected from a company that has blessed the industry with several juggernaut titles like Inside Out, Finding Nemo, Incredibles, and more.

Elio earned $9 million on its first day, which includes the $3 million generated from the Wednesday and Thursday previews. Additionally, as of June 22, 2025, Elio grossed $35 million worldwide, $21 million domestically, and $14 million internationally. Well, critics and audiences have given the movie great ratings, so now, if word-of-mouth could change the tables, we can expect it to earn an amount that can cover its $150 million production cost.

Elio and 28 Years Later were released in the theatres on June 20, 2025. While the former disappoints, the latter made a $60 million debut across 60 territories in its first weekend. Coming from the original director-writer duo, 28 Years Later impressed every fan with its spookiness and cinematography.

28 Years Later belongs to an ultra-popular horror franchise that revolutionized the zombie genre decades ago. The box office collection of 28 Years Later has been remarkable so far. So, now, with a fresh story and a new set of characters led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams, the film sits in the second position below How to Train Your Dragon.

Elio wasn’t promoted as it should have been, so those who didn’t spot the official trailer were unaware of the film. On the other hand, 28 Years Later created a significant hype ahead of its release. Hence, it makes sense why Elio didn’t get the traction it deserved, and 28 Years Later bagged all the attention from the worldwide fans who grew up watching the original films, as well as the new audience, who must have heard about it from their elders.
