Tommy is Joel Miller’s brave younger brother, who tricks death a couple of times in The Last of Us universe. While the HBO series replaces the junior Miller with Dina in Joel’s first encounter with Abby, the video game sees him getting brutally beaten by the vengeful girl and her group.

Following that incident, as we saw in the game, death comes for Tommy at their temporary base in Seattle. Tommy gets shot with a bullet by Abby while protecting Ellie and Dina. However, his fate remains ambiguous for some time.

Later, the game reveals that even though he doesn’t die in Seattle, he receives some severe injuries that change him forever. He becomes blind in one eye and walks with a limp. So, the one we knew as the courageous combatant eventually succumbed to his painful fate.

How Does Tommy’s Survival Matter?

Unlike the TV show, the game sees Tommy go after Abby before Ellie and Dina. However, that one confrontation with Abby in Seattle changes everything for the courageous character. He knew that he would never be able to avenge the death of his big brother, so he visits Ellie when she is leading a peaceful life with Dina and their kid in an isolated location. He’s the one who reignites the fire of revenge within Ellie and pushes her to think whether she wants to let go of Joel’s murderer.

Ellie never gets the closure before Tommy arrives at their farm, and we all know how crucial it was. So, even though she doesn’t kill Abby, she at least faces her enemy for one last time before heading back to Jackson. So, if it weren’t for Tommy, Ellie would have never realized what she truly wanted.
