Game Science just revealed a 15-minute gameplay of Black Myth Zhong Kui out of nowhere, and it features a ton of details that you shouldn’t miss. The game will follow the story of Zhong Kui, another famous character from Chinese mythology and folklore. Here are 7 details we spotted in the Black Myth Zhong Kui gameplay trailer.

Black Myth Zhong Kui Gameplay Trailer Breakdown

When Black Myth Zhong Kui was first announced, the gaming community have been waiting for its first gameplay reveal, and Game Science didn’t disappoint us. The Black Myth Zhong Kui gameplay trailer was action-packed and revealed multiple bosses, NPCs, and core gameplay mechanics. Below are the gameplay details we spotted in the trailer:

1. Sword Techniques

Anyone who has played Black Myth Wukong would remember the four skills players could equip to create a wide range of effects. Zhong Kui seems to follow a similar gameplay loop, but instead of showy abilities, the skills appear to be rooted in sword techniques.

We can clearly see the four different skills in the bottom right corner, and next to them is a bar that constantly fills up after hitting, parrying, or dodging enemies. This bar appears to work the same as the heavy attack stance bar in Black Myth Wukong.

However, since the skills don’t show any cooldown, players may need to charge up this bar to use the sword techniques in Black Myth Zhong Kui.

2. Blocking, Parrying, and Counterattack

Black Myth Wukong’s combat is more centered around dodging enemy attacks. It didn’t have a default parry mechanic, and players would have to use the Rock Solid ability to parry in Black Myth Wukong. Black Myth Zhong Kui appears to have a default parry and counterattack mechanic. The gameplay trailer shows constantly parrying and counterattacking enemies.

We recently saw a counterattack mechanic in the Onimusha Way of the Sword demo, where you could counterattack enemies by timing your attacks right before they hit you. The Zhong Kui counterattack mechanic appears to work the same way. We also see that Zhong Kui is able to block attacks, which reduces damage taken.

3. Imbuing Elements

One of the core features in Black Myth Wukong was elemental affinity attacks. However, instead of making it part of the player’s abilities, it was either tied to spirits, weapons, or transformation. In the Black Myth Zhong Kui gameplay trailer, we saw something much more interesting. We saw Zhong Kui absorb an element, fire in this case, from the surroundings and imbue it in the sword.

Later, we also saw him doing a similar thing with a boss ability aimed at him. There was another moment when Zhong Kui’s weapon was imbued with lightning. This clearly means that players will be able to imbue their weapons at ease based on the surroundings.

4. Summons and Transformations

Spirits and Transformations made Black Myth Wukong stand out among the other action-adventure games. They allowed players to use enemy abilities for a brief second, or transform into an enemy boss they have defeated for a short duration. Black Myth Zhong Kui appears to have a similar mechanic.

We see Zhong Kui summon a spirit and have it fight alongside him. The spirit actually lingers for the entire fight, instead of going away. This hints that it is more of a summoning feature than the spirit mechanic in Black Myth Wukong.

Other than that, we also see Zhong Kui transform into the summon after some time, directly using its abilities, which looked the same as the mechanic in Wukong.

5. Mounts

Black Myth Zhong Kui will likely have mounts. Although we have yet to see a gameplay clip of him riding an animal, it has been shown in multiple cinematic clips. The official gameplay art of Zhong Kui also shows him riding a giant beast, which further hints that the game will have mounts.

The mounts can be tied to the summoning feature, which will make them fight alongside the player in battle. But we will have to wait and see before we can confirm this mechanic.

6. Play Instruments

A brief moment in the Black Myth Zhong Kui gameplay trailer shows Zhong Kui playing instruments. And he is playing it in a band of skeletons, each having a different instrument. This hints that players may be able to play Chinese classical instruments in Zhong Kui.

7. Fishing

Players may be able to fish in Black Myth Zhong Kui. One of the small cutscenes show Zhong Kui fish with a wooden rod, ending up catching a massive sea monster. Whether this will be a mechanic players can use anywhere, or simply a gimmick to trigger a boss fight is not known yet.
