Confirming that the megapixel war for smartphone cameras is here to stay, Xiaomi has started teasing an upcoming Redmi phone with a 64MP camera. The company earlier today posted what’s believed to be a camera sample from the smartphone, depicting a domestic cat, with a zoomed-in section in the inset showing off incredible details around the cat’s eye. While there’s no official word on the identity of the 64MP sensor, it is likely to be Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor that was announced back in May.

While Xiaomi may become the first company to launch a smartphone with the new sensor, it will certainly not be the only one. Realme has already been working on a phone with the Samsung GW1 sensor and, is expected to launch the device before the end of the year. Samsung itself is also said to have plans to launch a new phone with its 64MP camera in the coming months, so it will be interesting to see how all this plays out going forward.

In case you don’t know it already, Samsung last May announced its new 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 image sensor with 0.8μm pixels for ultra high-res mobile photography. According to the company, the GW1 can produce bright 16MP images in low-light environments and highly-detailed 64MP shots in brighter settings. The sensor also supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100-decibels (dB) to provide richer hues.

Alongside the 64MP sensor, Samsung also released an updated 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2 sensor with Tetracell technology in low-light environments and a remosaic algorithm in well-lit settings, bringing highly-detailed pictures with natural and vivid colors.
