So, X-Men ’97 Episode 5 just dropped, and trust me when I say it, after watching it I might need to schedule a therapy session for myself. This episode started merrily with the state of Genosha finally becoming a member of the United Nations. But, the way it ended left me shocked and wide-eyed. The episode 5 starts turning dark in the middle and never stops till the very last frame.

The episode 5 of X-Men ’97 brings us the destruction of Genosha at the hands of Sentinels but since Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit were still standing and putting up a fight, I had a bit of hope that they would get things under control. Well, saying I was wrong would be an understatement. We see Magneto using a train to fight the Sentinel mothership but it turns out to be useless. Even though Magneto fought strongly, he was overpowered and killed.
Just when I was processing the trauma of watching Magneto die, Gambit went head-on against the Mothership and when I thought that he was going to take it down, he got stabbed by it. Using his powers, Gambit, still hanging to the Mothership, made it explode and laid down his life in a feat of glory. When the episode ended with Rogue holding Gambit and saying, “I can’t feel you”, it left me dumbfounded and shocked.
Trust me when I say this, X-Men ’97 is really not holding back with its story because showing us the death of two beloved characters in a gap of 2 minutes is just evil. The way the story of X-Men ’97 is shaping up, especially after the events of Episode 5, it is difficult to say where it will lead next.
Is Magneto Really Dead in Episode 5?
The biggest question in the X-Men community after episode 5 is whether Magneto is really dead. In the final minutes of X-Men ’97 episode 5, we get to see that Magneto is badly injured after engaging the Sentinel Mothership in combat. Even after being so brutally injured, Magneto was still putting up a fight but eventually, we see him being taken down by the Mothership’s lasers.
Watching that, I thought Magneto would survive but when the Mothership said “Omega Level Threat Eliminated” my heart sank to my stomach. Since we did not see Magneto’s dead body it is difficult to say if he’s really dead by the end of Episode 5 of X-Men ’97. I for one would love to see him come back sometime soon but in all honesty, I don’t think anything can survive a blast that powerful, even Magneto. So let’s wait and see what the writers have planned for the future episodes while we wait for the release of Episode 6 on April 17, 2024.
