  • The live-action film officially began filming on April 20, 2026.
  • The Gundam movie stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, among other stars, in an original story.

The long-awaited live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie is finally mobilizing. After years of development shifts and creative changes, the project has officially entered production under the partnership of Legendary Entertainment, Bandai Namco Filmworks, and Netflix. For fans of the franchise who are eagerly waiting to capture the mecha-action on the big screen, we have compiled everything revealed about the Gundam movie so far right here.

Gundam Movie Release Date

At the time of writing, a specific theatrical or streaming release date for the Gundam movie has not yet been locked in. However, Legendary and Netflix have officially announced that principal photography for the movie began on April 20, 2026, in Queensland, Australia.

Given the massive amount of post-production and visual effects required to bring huge Mobile Suits to life, it is reasonable to estimate a release window in late 2027 or early 2028. The Gundam movie is expected to debut globally on Netflix, though Legendary may handle a theatrical rollout in select territories (specifically Japan).

Is There a Trailer for the Gundam Movie?

As of now, there is no official trailer for the live-action Gundam movie yet. Since the cameras only began rolling, fans should not expect a teaser until filming wraps, likely in late 2026.

So far, the only visual materials released for the Gundam movie have been high-level concept art showing a gritty, atmospheric look at a classic RX-78-2-inspired mecha standing in the middle of fire and debris. The “first look” footage could potentially debut at a major event like Comic-Con or Netflix’s Tudum later this year.

Jim Mickle has not tackled a big-budget blockbuster like the Gundam movie yet. However, the director has fared well with his writing in projects like Cold in July, presenting compelling human drama, which is a core tenet of the Gundam franchise. With Bandai Namco being closely involved with the adaptation, it looks like fans of the franchise are in for a faithful adaptation of the beloved anime.

What Will be the Gundam Movie Storyline?

Since the movie just started production, very little is known about the plotline of the Gundam movie. However, Netflix has described the film as a “brand-new, original story” rather than a beat-for-beat remake of the 1979 anime. However, the movie is sure to stay true to the franchise’s core themes of political intrigue and the horrors of war.

Here is the official synopsis for the Gundam movie: “The story follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its former space colonies. As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course, they are pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity.”

While the production is using the working title “Teardrop,” the plot appears to lean into the “star-crossed rivals” trope. The movie could possibly draw inspiration from the tension seen in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team.
