Squid Game was first released in 2021 and since then, it has dominated Netflix by being one of the most-watched shows on the platform. Recently, Squid Game Season 2 was released and the fanbase enjoyed it equally, thanks to the plotline and impeccable characters. However, ever since the show came out, one question remains unanswered. Why is Netflix’s Squid Game called as such? So let me bring you the meaning behind naming this series Squid Game.
Why Is Squid Game Called Squid Game?

Netflix’s Squid Game gets its title from the final round in the show which is ‘The Squid Game,’ a popular kids game in Korea. In this game, a squid-shaped map is drawn on the ground and the players are divided into two teams. One is the attacker while the other one is the defender. A player from the defending team makes their way to the head of the squid following the map on the ground while the attacking player tries to stop them. Whoever succeeds gets a point for their respective team.
The creator of Squid Game Hwang Dong-hyuk recently had an interview with Radio Times where he revealed the meaning being the title stating that his childhood and the games he used to play influenced whatever we have seen in Squid Game. He also said that this particular game is a symbol to him of how today’s society works where one person is trying to pull down another person.
“Squid Game is a game I used to play as a child in the schoolyard or the streets of the neighbourhood. This is a story about people who used to play this game as children and return to play it as adults. It was one of the most physical and it was also one of my favourite games. I felt that this game could be the most symbolic children’s game that could represent the kind of society we live in today.” – Hwang Dong-hyuk
