After Steve Rogers gave up his shield, the future of Captain America was rather unclear. Even though we all knew that eventually Sam Wilson would pick up the mantle and become the First Avenger, people have been skeptical of how well he would be able to carry the role. So, with the release of Captain America: Brave New World we have the first cinematic appearance of Sam as Cap after briefly taking up the mantle in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Additionally, this movie is also bringing in a new Marvel villain called The Leader, and now, let me give you a detailed brief on who this character is in the Marvel universe.
The Leader Is the Archnemesis of the Hulk in Marvel
In Marvel comics, the Hulk has faced several villains who can be classified as his nemesis, however, when it comes to being an absolute menace, The Leader leaves behind all the other villains by a million miles. In MCU, before turning into the notorious villain, The Leader was a menial worker named Samuel Sterns at a chemical plant. One day, while handling radioactive material he was bombarded with Gamma radiation which turned his skin green and gave him a freakishly huge head.
While Gamma radiation gave Bruce Banner limitless power as The Hulk, it gave Samuel intellect equal to The Hulk’s strength. After Samuel gained powers from the Gamma radiation, he set his mind on gaining control of the United States Government. To achieve this, he spent the first few years after his transformation creating an extensive circle of spies and men who worked under him.
However, the version of Samuel Sterns we saw in the MCU was very different from his canon version. In The Incredible Hulk released in 2008, we see that Sterns got infected with Bruce Banner’s blood and started turning into something. But, we never got to see what became of him neither in this movie nor in the sequel. Now, Sterns is back in Captain America: Brave New World as The Leader and is being played by the same actor.
Tim Blake Nelson Is Playing The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World
As I mentioned above, Samuel Sterns made his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk and was played by Tim Blake Nelson. After being infected by Bruce Banner’s blood, Sterns started transforming but we did not see what happened to him and now, he is reappearing in Captain America: Brave New World as The Leader who is going to be the main villain of the movie.
