- A new leak reveals that the OnePlus Open 2 will arrive with a slimmer design and a bigger display.
- More importantly, the Open 2 will finally feature wireless charging and a bigger 5,700mAh battery.
- The OnePlus Open 2 is expected to launch sometime in Q1 2025, and I cannot wait to try it out.
Having tested almost every foldable released to date, be it the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro (impressions) to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (review), the OnePlus Open sits cozily in my top five. Needless to say, after having a OnePlus Open as my daily driver for roughly two months, I eagerly await the launch of the OnePlus Open 2, which is expected to launch early next year. A new leak is making me lose patience as, from the looks of it, the Open 2 could very well turn out to be my favorite foldable phone in 2025.
OnePlus Open’s folded body, which came to around 153.4 x 73.3 x 11.7 mm, already makes it quite a sleek foldable. Unfolded, the phone further slims down at 5.8 mm. However, a leak by tipster Digital Chat Station (courtesy of GSMArena) on Weibo reveals that the OnePlus Open successor will bring “extreme slimness” to the foldable form factor.
As per previous leaks, the Open 2 could be well under 10 mm in terms of slimness folded, making it even thinner than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
However, DCS states that the upcoming phone will retain the design of its predecessor. The internal display size has seemingly been increased though. But, I wouldn’t expect it to be massive and just slightly larger at around 8 inches or so, given that Vivo and Google’s foldables do have similar displays on the inside. Larger than that would just make it uncomfortable to use, since it will also affect the weight.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, for example, although the slimmest, is also the heaviest foldable out there. So, if the OnePlus Open 2 manages to be larger than its predecessor yet lighter than its rivals then that will undoubtedly give it quite the leverage.
Furthermore, the leak reveals the cameras on the Open 2 will get an upgrade. Instead of the Open’s 48MP main sensor, we will see a 50MP “Hasselblad Master Tone” sensor. Meanwhile, the 48MP ultra-wide will also bumped up to a 50MP sensor, as per the leak.
Additionally, instead of a 64MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, the OnePlus Open 2 is said to feature a 50MP periscope camera, possibly with 5x optical zoom. While the sensor details are not known currently, it’s still a notable upgrade on the optics front.
The Open 2 will also come with a significantly bigger 5,700mAh battery. For your reference, the OG Open packs a 4,805mAh battery unit. OxygenOS 15 is quite power-efficient, so that should help boost the usage even further.
Most importantly, alongside the bigger battery, the leak suggests that Open 2 could also come with wireless charging. The OnePlus Open missed out on this, while most other foldables come with the feature. Given how OnePlus is reportedly working to introduce a new MagSafe-like proprietary charging tech with the OnePlus 13, it won’t be a surprise to see the Open 2 flaunt it as well.
And, of course, the new Snapdragon 8 Elite, but with a slightly higher clock, is expected to power the OnePlus Open 2. At least, that’s what “Snapdragon 8 Extreme Edition” could mean. Either way, it could be one of the first foldable Snapdragon 8 Elite phones. Not to mention that it will be a huge upgrade over the Open’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
Packing all that tech into a slim foldable has me wondering how far we have come in the world of smartphone technology. With 2025 not even two months away, I am excited to see what OnePlus has in store for its Open 2.
