The Roger Pirates are undoubtedly the greatest pirate crew to ever set sail, with their tales echoing through the seas of One Piece. The crew, led by Gol D. Roger, sailed across the entire globe, found the One Piece treasure, and remains the only pirate crew to ever do so until today. Even though the Roger Pirates disbanded after their captain’s demise, some of the important crew members make an appearance to aid the Straw Hat Pirates from time to time. So, let’s learn everything about the Roger Pirates members, including their names, roles, and abilities.

Who Are the Roger Pirates in One Piece?

There is only one pirate crew whose fame reached every island across the treacherous seas of One Piece, and it’s the Roger Pirates.
Led by the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger, this pirate crew comprised formidable members like Rayleigh, Scopper Gaban, Shanks, Oden, and several others. They are the first and only known crew to sail through the Grand Line completely and find the legendary One Piece treasure left behind by Joy Boy at the final island, Laugh Tale.
The Roger Pirates are one of the largest pirate crews we have ever seen in the story, with around 33 crew members and 4 apprentices. They sailed on the Oro Jackson, one of the best ships in One Piece. Their Jolly Roger is based on their captain’s iconic mustache and has a smiling skull.

Over the last almost three decades, we have learned about all the members of the Roger Pirates in One Piece. We have listed out the details for all crew members below:
1. Gol D. Roger

Even after decades, Roger remains the greatest pirate ever known. He set out to the seas, put together a legendary crew, and achieved all his pirate dreams. Roger was also the first pirate to become the Pirate King by conquering the seas.
Unfortunately, plagued by an incurable disease, he surrendered himself to the World Government and was executed in front of the world in Loguetown. Still, he kicked off the Great Pirate Era by inspiring every pirate out there to find the fabled One Piece treasure.
2. Silvers Rayleigh
- Role: First Mate
- Crew Debut: Episode 8, Chapter 19
- Devil Fruit: Nil
- Haki: Armament, Observation, and Conqueror’s
- Bounty: Unknown
When Roger set out to become a pirate, he first met Rayleigh, and the latter immediately became his First Mate. After countless adventures with the Roger Pirates, Rayleigh is still fearsomely known as the Dark King. He will always be remembered as the Right-Hand Man of the Pirate King, and Zoro will mirror his role in the Straw Hat Pirates, standing alongside Luffy.
Moreover, Rayleigh was seen as the Vice Captain of the Roger Pirates. He was a formidable character during their time. Even though he is no longer in his prime, the newest Yonko, Blackbeard, was shown to be fearful of him in recent events of the Egghead arc.
3. Scopper Gaban
- Role: Navigator and Left Hand of the Pirate King

Scopper Gaban was rumored to be the third most important member of the Roger Pirates, and Oda has now confirmed that in the manga. During Oden’s flashback, we met the character; however, not many details were revealed to the fandom. Oda recently reintroduced Gaban in his old age in the ongoing Elbaf arc, and he is already causing a stir.
During his reintroduction, Oda confirmed that he was indeed the Left-Hand man of the Pirate King. He is known to possess strength that rivals Roger and Rayleigh and is also popularly known as the Mountain Eater.
Gaban settled in Elbaf with his wife Ripley and has a kid now called Colon. As expected, Oda has revealed that Gaban is the navigator of the Roger Pirates in the most recent SBS Interview. Gaban asked the Straw Hats to visit him when they were preparing to leave Elbaf.
Therefore, we predict that he will impart his navigation knowledge to Nami regarding sailing to the final islands. We are looking forward to learn more not just about his axemanship but also his navigation conversation with Nami in the upcoming chapters of the One Piece manga.
4. Kozuki Oden

Kozuki Oden, the former daimyo, longed to explore the world outside of Wano Country and got to live his dream as a pirate. He was the only character to become a member of the legendary Roger and Whitebeard Pirates.
Oden was an indispensable member of the Roger Pirates as he helped Roger uncover the secrets of the poneglyphs and reach the final island, Laugh Tale. His wife, Toki, also accompanied him on his adventures with the Roger Pirates until her sickness forbade her.
5. Crocus
- Role: Doctor
- Crew Debut: Episode 400, Chapter 506
- Devil Fruit: Nil
- Haki: Unknown
- Bounty: Unknown
Little did we know that the old lighthouse keeper, Crocus-san, whom we met during the events of the Reverse Mountain arc (see One Piece arcs in order), used to be a member of the Roger Pirates.
Crocus was the doctor of the crew, mentioned to be the best doctor of his generation. His medical skills were vital in mitigating Roger’s disease throughout his pirating journey. He now spends his time taking care of Laboon and the Lighthouse.
As Brook aims to reunite with Laboon some day, we will be meeting with Crocus-san again at the end of the One Piece series.
6. Shanks

Before founding the Red Hair Pirates, Shanks served as an apprentice of the Roger Pirates. In fact, Roger’s crew found him inside a treasure chest after the God Valley incident and ended up raising him.
So, Shanks has been a part of the Roger Pirates since he was a newborn child. In the recent chapters of the Elbaf arc, it is confirmed that Shanks returned to the Holy Land to meet his Figarland family (one of the strongest families in One Piece), which would have probably taken place after the crew disbanded.
Roger and Shanks were quite close, and the Pirate King gifted him the iconic Straw Hat when he was just a kid. He learned from the best pirates in business and is now leading his yonko crew to glory.
7. Buggy
- Role: Apprentice
- Crew Debut: Episode 316, Chapter 434
- Devil Fruit: Nil
- Haki: Unknown
- Bounty: 3,189,000,000 Berries
Like Shanks, Buggy also served as a cabin boy of the Roger Pirates in his childhood and later moved on to form the Buggy Pirates. After witnessing the adventures of this crew in the anime, we learned Kid Buggy resembled the comical role, similar to Usopp in the Straw Hat Pirates.
After Roger’s execution, Shanks invited Buggy to join his new crew, but the clown refused. He then went on to establish his own crew, the Buggy Pirates. As luck would have it, Buggy is now one of the Emperors of the Seas and aims to reach the One Piece treasure with the Cross Guild in the story.
8. Inuarashi

As a retainer of Kozuki Oden, Inuarashi, a canine mink, followed him from a young age. He spent time with the Whitebeard Pirates at first and unexpectedly ended up as a stowaway inside Roger’s ship. So, Inuarashi was also selected as an apprentice alongside Shanks, Buggy, and his mink pal Nekomamushi.
When Toki had to return to Wano Country due to an illness, Inuarashi, as well as Nekomamushi, decided to stay with her while Oden continued his journey with Roger.
9. Nekomamushi

- Crew Debut: Episode 966, Chapter 966
- Devil Fruit: Nil
- Haki: Armament and Observation

In line with his fellow mink Inuarashi, Master Nekomamushi also sailed with the Whitebeard and Roger Pirates. Like Buggy, he filled the role of a cabin boy during his time with Roger’s crew.
The minks also aided Roger with finding the Road Poneglyph at Zou. Nekomamushi parted ways with the Roger Pirates to help Toki, who returned to Wano due to health issues.
10. Sunbell

Roger Pirates also had a Fish-Man on their crew, similar to how the Straw Hats have Jinbei as their shipwright. Named Sunbell, he made his debut in the One Piece Film: Strong World movie, one of the many One Piece movies.
Toei featured him with a more human-like color in the movie, and later changed it to a typical Fish-Man color in the anime. We don’t know much about Sunbell but hope to learn about him sometime in the future.

Only their character designs and names have been previously revealed. Years later, Oda finally revealed some of these members’ roles in an SBS interview.
