The One Piece world is dominated by pirates and Marines, yet neither side ever dared to question or rebel against the injustices of the World Government. But Monkey D. Dragon (son of the legendary Marine hero Monkey D. Garp) was the only one to stand up against oppression, founding the Revolutionary Army to fight for change. For years, we have been wondering what drove Dragon to walk this righteous path while everyone else only cared about their circle. Now in One Piece chapter 1160, we are finally getting our answers, including the shocking event of Dragon gunning down a Celestial Dragon.
Spoilers Warning:
This post contains heavy spoilers about Dragon’s role during the God Valley incident. Proceed with caution.
Monkey D. Dragon Saves Kuma, Ginny, and Ivankov By Shooting a Celestial Dragon
The previous chapter confirmed that a young Dragon who worked as a cadet in the Marines was present at the God Valley incident. Among the Marines, a 17-year-old Dragon was the only one to confront the senior officers over their inhumane actions on the God Valley island. After saving the Figarland twins, Dragon was seen trying to find a way out, during which he witnessed the horrors of the hunting competition conducted by the World Nobles in the name of fun and celebration.

Even the shot-down inhabitants warned Dragon not to help any of them, as the Celestial Dragons would brand him as a traitor and kill him as well. However, Dragon saw a Celestial Dragon trying to shoot Kuma’s group, which included a kid, Ivankov, and Ginny. Keep in mind that Dragon would go on to become friends with them only later on, and certainly not now.
The moment he saw a life about to be taken before his eyes, Dragon acted without hesitation by raising his rifle and gunning down the detestable Celestial Dragon. It is currently unclear if Dragon used a tranquilizing round or an actual bullet to take down that Celestial Dragon.
This particular moment recontextualizes Kuma’s journey when you think about it. Before Kuma, Ivankov, and Ginny saved one another by teaming up, it was Monkey D. Dragon who saved his future friends’ lives by committing the most unforgivable sin in the eyes of the World Government, shooting a Celestial Dragon.
Monkey D. Dragon and Monkey D. Luffy Connection

We all remember that Monkey D. Luffy (Dragon’s son) was the first character to ever strike down a Celestial Dragon in the story. Interestingly, it turns out that Monkey D. Dragon himself was also just 17 years old when he took down a Celestial Dragon. Talk about like father, like son, right? While Luffy punching the Celestial Dragon is celebrated as one of the most satisfying moments in the One Piece series, the celebration is about to get doubled when Dragon shooting the CD gets animated in the future.
Monkey D. Dragon may have followed his father’s footsteps to help the people by joining the Marines. However, having seen the wicked and inhumane manhunts of innocents by the Celestial Dragons with his own eyes, Dragon resolved to pursue the revolutionary path against the World Government.
It’s great to see Dragon, the true hero of the innocents, getting his deserved screen time in the One Piece series. Now, we can finally understand the reason why Dragon quit the Marines and founded the Revolutionary Army to help the people of the One Piece world.
As Dragon is finally getting his time to shine, hopefully, this will silence his haters who have been actively shouting that Dragon hasn’t done anything meaningful in the story yet. That said, let us know your thoughts about Dragon
