Is There a Sequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga?

Spoiler Warning: This article includes major spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.

The immensely popular Shonen manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, by Gege Akutami has come to a close with Chapter 271. The previous chapter release had sent the entire JJK fandom into a frenzy, with many speculating that an announcement for Jujutsu Kaisen manga Part 2 was coming with the final JJK chapter. So, the big question is – Is the Jujustu Kaisen manga getting a sequel? Well, you’re not the only one wondering whether Gege is coming back with Part 2 of his sorcery manga, Jujutsu Kaisen.

So, let’s find out what author Gege Akutami had to say in the final chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen about his plans for the future.

Based on how Gege Akutami started wrapping up all the plot points in the manga, it is no wonder that fans started expecting a sequel. In addition, after Chapter 270 was released, its final panel hinted at the fact that Gege would be announcing a new project. This sent the fandom into a spiral and everyone’s minds leaned towards the idea of Jujustu Kaisen Part 2.

However, it was later confirmed that the announcement was the Jujutsu Kaisen manga reaching the 100 million copies in circulation milestone.

While Gege could revive the JJK manga with a sequel or prequel, it looks like the author has no plans for Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2 right now. If Gege had already planned for a sequel, then he would have highlighted the announcement of a second part in the last panel of the final chapter, i.e. JJK Chapter 271. However, the editor’s note and Gege’s final comment – “I’ll keep doing my best in my future works” reveal that is not the case. Gege seems to be working on a new manga though.

A Jujutsu Kaisen Sequel/ Prequel Could Still Happen

Every single fan knows how Gege left more than ample mysteries and plotlines unanswered in his Jujutsu Kaisen manga. Thus, Gege’s dream work screams for a sequel from him. Gege wrapped up the story beautifully by making a call back to the first chapter and showing Sukuna’s last remaining finger in a wooden box.

But this time, things have changed as the finger is no longer considered a threat. Now, people use it as a talisman for protection from curses as it was intended to be from the start. However, fans are still hoping for a continuation of the manga in the future, but I have to add the chances of the next installment happening are slim.

For me, Sukuna’s brief talk with Mahito, along with the final panel, marks the ending of the story with the King of Curse coming to terms with his current reality. Yuji also got the desired ending as his Gojo sensei (read if Gojo was revived in JJK final chapter) dreamed of where he would replace him. As Yuji’s grandfather wished for him in the first chapter, Yuji will continue to help people no matter what. All these facts together make it a natural conclusion to the dark fantasy manga from Gege.

Therefore, I believe that Gege Akutami’s time with Jujutsu Kaisen is over, and he will start focusing on new works. At this moment, it is speculated that Gege could be coming up with a new idol manga. In case you don’t know, Gege wanted to switch to drawing an idol manga after he wrapped up JJK 0 (see Jujutsu Kaisen in order). But his editor advised him to stick with JJK, and that’s how the series was born. That is exactly why fans are expecting him to return to his old project now that JJK has officially ended.

To sum up, Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2 is not happening for now, even if fans keep yearning for a sequel manga. That said, drop your thoughts on whether Gege should continue the Jujutsu Kaisen manga or not in the comments below. Should he tell Sukuna’s origin story? Or, should he explain how the top three Jujutsu families came to be?
