The Minecraft 1.21.9 ‘The Copper Age’ update is live, bringing lots of new and unexpected features, including a helping hand in inventory management – copper golems. This is the same, popular fan-favorite golem that once got outvoted in the Minecraft mob vote, but it never left the players’ hearts. Now that they’ve finally arrived, these adorable helpers can clean up your mess when you are busy with your adventures. So, let’s learn how to make a copper golem in Minecraft and explain what it does.
What is a Copper Golem in Minecraft

A copper golem is a small and cute helper you can summon in Minecraft with only a couple of items. The golem will spawn alongside a copper chest. In fact, when you spawn them like any other golem, they appear standing atop the copper chest.
Copper golems aren’t really fighters and won’t stand up against hostile mobs in Minecraft. Rather, you would primarily find them carrying items and managing them in the chests and inventory. So, head to the section below to know all about summoning them in the game.
Items You Need to Make a Copper Golem
The copper golem doesn’t require a lot of resources and can be spawned using two items, which are:
- 1 Copper Block (9 copper ingots)
- 1 Carved Pumpkin
To make a single copper block, you will need 9 copper ingots. The copper ingots can be obtained by smelting raw copper, found by mining copper ores in Minecraft. You will need to craft a furnace to smelt copper ore.
The second item, a carved pumpkin, can be obtained either by using a Shear on regular pumpkins or by obtaining it from the Woodland Mansions and Pillager Outposts. These carved pumpkins can be easily broken and picked up with your hands in the game.
How to Spawn a Minecraft Copper Golem
Once you have collected the required materials, follow the steps below to spawn a copper golem in Minecraft:
- Place a copper block on the ground, where you want to summon the golem.
- Then, place the carved pumpkin on top of the copper block.
- The copper golem will then be summoned on top of a copper chest.
You can also place another copper block beside the previous chest, and a carved pumpkin on top of it to summon another golem. But this time, the copper chests will combine to create a double copper chest.
What is the Use of Copper Golems
The main purpose of copper golems in Minecraft is that they help in sorting items kept inside the chests. Suppose you have an incomplete stack of oak planks inside the copper chests, along with a few other oak planks kept in another box.
So, the copper golem can take 16 stacks of a single item from the copper chests, search for its match in the nearby wooden chest or trapped chest, and place it there. If no matches are found, it looks for a bit more time and eventually places the item in a new chest slot.
Additional Features of a Copper Golem
Here are major pointers you should keep in mind about how copper golems work in Minecraft:
- The copper golems can open and close non-iron doors. It will only pick up items from copper chests, but not the ones dropped on the ground.
- The golems can age and change their oxidation states. Once the golem reaches its final stage and becomes green, there’s a chance it will turn into a copper golem statue.
- A copper golem that has a certain item in its hand will drop it when killed or when turned into a statue.
- Copper golems will spawn in the same state as the copper block you placed below the carved pumpkin. So, you get exposed or oxidized copper golems when using the respective copper blocks.
- You can always use a Honeycomb to wax the copper golems and prevent them from wearing out. Alternatively, you can use an axe to scrape off its patina.
- A copper golem of any nature (waxed, exposed, or oxidized) can sort out items from copper chests of any nature as well.
Apart from these, there’s a fun mechanic of Iron Golems occasionally placing a poppy flower on top of a copper golem. So, that’s all about making a copper golem in Minecraft, what materials you need, and how it helps the players manage their inventory in the game.
