The Story Behind Barbie’s Creation Explained

A California stenographer named Ruth Handler initially founded a furniture manufacturing company in the 40s alongside her husband. However, during World War II, the company started seeing its downfall, leaving the Handlers concerned about the future of their family business.

It wasn’t until 1956 that Ruth conceived the idea of Barbie after encountering an adult-looking doll in Europe. Ahead of her trip to Europe, she only saw dolls that were like babies, and for the first time, she witnessed a doll that looked like a teenager. Hence, she ended up creating the first-ever Barbie in 1959 and made it a profitable deal for the family.
