How to Get and Use Sculk Sensor in Minecraft 1.19

The Redstone mechanisms in Minecraft have depended on visual and physical movement for years. But all of that is about to change with the release of the Minecraft 1.19 update. This update brings a family of sculk blocks to the game, and one of them is the sculk sensor. This block is the informant for the Warden in Minecraft 1.19 but can also make your Redstone machines efficient. That is, as long as you know how to use the sculk sensor in Minecraft. So, let’s not waste time and learn everything you need to know about the sculk sensor.

Sculk Sensor in Minecraft 1.19 (2022)

First, we will go over the history and mechanics of the sculk sensor and directly skip to how it works and its usage with Redstone through the table below.

What is a Sculk Sensor in Minecraft

A sculk sensor is a sculk block and a Redstone component that detects vibrations around itself and releases Redstone signals. This block also sends signals to the Warden and reveals the source of the detected vibrations. It also glows slightly after detecting the vibration and while sending out the signal.

As for the vibrations, the block picks up almost all movements and activities in the game within a 9-block radius. But it doesn’t detect the Warden, other sculk sensors, and sneaking players. Moreover, it also ignores vibrations if there is a wool block between the sensor and the source of vibration.

Where Does the Sculk Sensor Spawn

The sculk sensor only spawns in the Deep Dark biome. Here, you can find the sculk sensor generating naturally, even in areas that don’t have the Ancient City. Though, it spawns at a much higher rate closer to the city.

How to Get Sculk Sensor in Minecraft

The sculk sensor is one of the more common blocks that spawn in the new Deep Dark biome. But, to mine and pick up the sculk sensor, you need to use the silk touch enchantment on any in-game tool. You can use our dedicated Minecraft enchantments guide to easily learn how to apply it in no time.

If you don’t use the enchantment while mining the sensor, it only drops experience orbs and disappears. We suggest you use the enchanted hoe to mine it. Alternatively, you can also get the sculk sensor from Ancient city chests. They spawn in a group of up to three blocks in a single chest. As per Minecraft Wiki, it has around a 23% chance of spawning as chest loot.

How Does the Sculk Sensor Work

The sculk sensor follows these game mechanics to function in Minecraft 1.19:

  • The sensors only detect vibrations if they happen within a 9-block radius.
  • To help the Warden, the player-based vibrations from one sculk sensors travel to other nearby sensors.
  • Once activated, the sculk sensor glows and stays lit for 2 seconds. While it is activated, it cannot detect other vibrations.
  • They also can’t detect vibrations during their cooldown period, which lasts for one in-game tick or 0.05 seconds.
  • A sculk sensor can easily pick the smallest of vibrations. So, activities like placing a block or gliding with Elytra are also detected in no time.
  • Lastly, if a player is sneaking in the Deep Dark, the sensor won’t detect the player. It also remains true if the player is walking, falling, and firing projectile while sneaking.

How to Stop Sculk Sensor from Detecting You

Wool is known to dampen sounds in Minecraft. Because of that, you can use wool blocks to block sources of vibrations from reaching the sculk sensor when required. Similarly, the sculk sensor can’t detect vibrations caused by footsteps or items being dropped on the wool blocks.

You can place wool blocks on all sides of the sculk sensor to block vibrations from reaching it and detecting your presence when you explore the Deep Dark.

How to Use Sculk Sensor with Redstone

The sculk sensor works just like other signal sending blocks. If you connect the sensor to other Redstone components, they will receive a signal and get activated when the sensor detects a vibration. Then, you can use it to light the Redstone torch, play note blocks, and even trigger blocks like a dispenser in Minecraft.

How to Use Sculk Sensor in Minecraft

The sculk sensor gives out Redstone signals when it detects vibrations, so you can place them next to any Redstone machine. Doing so will make that machine activate whenever it detects vibrations. Then, you can use the sculk sensor in the following ways:

  • You can use the sensor to create movement-based machines like automatic doors and even farms.
  • On some of the best Minecraft servers, the sculk sensor can help create traps that get activated whenever a player comes near them.
  • If you are creating a Warden farm, you can use the sculk sensor to guide Warden to a particular location.
  • Lastly, even though it’s not the primary function of the sculk sensors, they are still reliable light sources. So, you can also use them to have automatic lights in your Minecraft house.

How Will You Use Sculk Sensor in Minecraft

It’s finally time to make your Redstone machines more powerful with the help of sculk sensors in Minecraft. But thanks to the new update, you can even use Allay in Minecraft to make automatic farms. Their presence is much easier to handle than Redstone mechanics, and their cuteness is a welcoming bonus. However, if you want to stick to the sculk blocks, make sure you know how to defeat the Warden before you jump into the caves to get the sensors. Also, don’t forget to make a few of the best Minecraft potions for added protection. Having said that, how do you plan to use sculk sensors in Minecraft? Tell us in the comments!
