  • Playground Games' Fable is a reboot of the original franchise, set to launch in Autumn 2026.
  • The game will take players to the storybook fantasy world of Albion.
  • At its core, Fable is an RPG with life-sim elements.

Initially announced back in 2020, the Fable reboot is finally set to launch this year. Developed by Playground Games (creators of Forza Horizon), the upcoming RPG/life-sim hybrid will take players back to the cottagecore comforts of Albion, where they can live out a personalized fairytale. The upcoming title carries all the hallmarks of the original trilogy (including an overwhelming number of chickens), which is why fans are anxious to learn more about it.

If you’re also looking forward to the game, here’s everything we know so far about Fable, including its release window, platforms, gameplay features, and more.

Playground hasn’t provided a concrete release date for Fable just yet, but it confirmed that it’ll arrive in Autumn 2026. This puts it somewhere in the Q3 slot on the 2026 games calendar, meaning it could compete against the likes of Phatom Blade Zero and GTA 6.

The RPG will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on day one. It also supports the Xbox Anywhere program and will be a part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate catalogue.

Fable Editions and Price

Fable’s editions and pricing are yet to be confirmed, although the game will likely be available in three editions. These could include Standard, Deluxe, and Premium, with new bonus content being added as the pricing rises. Speaking of which, the game’s base edition will likely cost $69.99, which is the standard price for nearly every Xbox release.

Fable Story Details

In classic Fable fashion, you’ll begin the game as a child residing in the sleepy village of Briar Hill. The player character’s signature hero powers are discovered at this young age, before a mysterious stranger turns the whole village – including your beloved grandmother – into stone. This forms the catalyst of the story, and you’ll play the rest of the game as a mature adult in their prime.

Your quest to find the mysterious stranger will take you familair locations such as Bowerstone and the Hero’s Guild. Along the way, you’ll meet eccentric characters and go on side adventures, where the decisions you make will leave lasting impacts on the open world.

Timeline-wise, the Fable reboot isn’t beholden to the events of the original Fable trilogy. Instead, the game is essentially a new beginning, making things more accessible for new players while also remaining faithful to the central qualities of the 360-era RPGs.

Fable Gameplay Features

At its core, the Fable reboot is an RPG/life-sim hybrid, where you can complete quests, explore the open world, engage in combat, and carefully micro-manage your reputation among the NPCs. Here’s an overview of its gameplay features:

Open World

The RPG’s open-world map is a pastoral landscape made up of rolling hills and magical forests, and dotted by sleepy hamlets and oversized vegetable patches. Of course, the region is still Albion – a very British medieval fantasy world. Right from the jump, you’ll be able to go anywhere you want as Fable will not lock regions behind level gates or quest requirements.

At the heart of the map is the capital city of Bowerstone, which is a melting pot for NPCs from different classes and walks of life. When you venture outside the city’s walls and towards northern Albion, you’ll discover craggy coastlines, spooky marshes, and the much shadier city of Bloodstone. Geopolitical tensions are rife in this wind-swept city, and you’ll be able to determine which of its two factions is in charge.

NPCs and Reputation System

It won’t be a Fable game without a Reputation and Character Management system that could put the Sims to shame. Just like in the original trilogy, the reboot features many unique NPCs (100 plus, to be exact), each with day-and-night routines, likes and dislikes, and more. You can interact with all of these characters, romance them, start a family, and even break their hearts like the ‘twat’ you are.

Their opinion of you will be molded by your actions, of course. Every player activity conducted within sight of other NPCs will affect reputation. For instance, if a person sees you kicking a chicken, you will start to get a reputation as a ‘Chicken Chaser’, and if enough people see you do it, that reputation will become one of the things you’re known for in that settlement.

People will react to you based on what they think about that particular reputation. If they fancy your chicken-kicking capacities, you’ll have a better chance at romancing them. But if they think you’re a cruel idiot, it’s a no-go. The same logic applies to many other activities in the game, and their statuses are displayed by a ‘Word Cloud’ in-game. Fortunately, there will be ways to wipe the slate and clean up your reputation, like paying a Town Crier to sing your praises.

Activities

While there is a main story to engage with, Fable is all about creating your own storybook fantasy. The game features a plethora of activities, including blacksmithing (among other jobs), buying up properties, renting said properties, completing quests, making tough decisions, and much more. You can also choose to abandon the main path and start a family straightaway to live the idyllic life.

Character Creation

The upcoming title will include a detailed character creator at launch, complete with a suite of heads, skin tones, hair, tattoos, outfits, and scars that you can pick from. During the broader game, you’ll be able to customize your character by learning new skills and abilities.

Fable Combat Details

Fable features third-person action combat where your hero can use weapons and spells to dispatch different kinds of enemies. During combat encounters, you’ll be juggling between armaments such as swords, magical abilities, and ranged weapons. Aside from their health, enemies will have a posture bar, which can be depleted to pull off a stylish finish move.

Based on the combat footage showcased thus far, all melee weapons appear to have attack chains and can also be used to block. In terms of magic, we’ve seen fire spells, lightning spells, and even an ability that turns enemies into tiny chickens. You’ll be going toe-to-toe against a range of human enemies as well as creatures like Hobbes, Skeletons, Trolls, and a new monster known as the Cockatrice.

And that wraps up everything we know about Fable so far. We’ll be sure to update this article once new information is released. Until then, let us know if you’re excited for the game in the comments section below.
