  • Gamers in co-op parties enter a near-death stage before dying, and can be revived by their teammates. Solo players are hit with the 'You Died' screen immediately after losing their health.
  • The run ends when all three players are defeated in co-op parties. For solo players, their journey ends as soon as they're down during the nighttime,

Death has always been a daunting inevitability in FromSoftware’s soulslike titles, but in Elden Ring Nightreign, dying is more detrimental than ever. Given its roguelike emphasis, the gameplay revolves around three-day cycles where players must collect upgrades and weapons before taking on an imperious final boss. Falling in battle at any point during this cycle comes with the danger of eradicating all the progress you’ve made so far. But thankfully, the devs have made dying slightly less penalising than immediate elimination in some crucial ways. To help you understand this mechanic, here’s what happens when you die in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Elden Ring Nightreign Death Explained

Dying in Elden Ring Nightreign results in the loss of all your runes and reduces your current level by one. This effect remains the same across both solo players and Nightfarers playing together in a party. However, if you’re playing in co-op, you’ll enter a near-death state after your HP falls to zero, while solo players will instantly see the ‘You Died‘ screen after suffering fatal damage.

In the near-death state, your character will begin crawling around at a snail’s pace. A purple gauge will also pop up above them. It features segmented bars that indicate how often your teammates need to attack your character to revive you. The bigger the bar, the more damage your party members must inflict to get you back in the fight.

One crucial detail to remember is that if you’re downed during the night, this purple gauge will remain active until the other two Nightfarers in your party are alive. But during the morning, a timer will run on the outer edge of the gauge. If your teammates fail to revive you before this timer runs out, you’ll suffer the death penalty mentioned above and be respawned at the last Site of Grace you visited, or a safe spot nearby. If all three players in a party die in succession, the run will end, and you’ll be greeted by the ‘Defeat‘ screen, which essentially means game over.

As for solo players, once their health falls to zero, they’ll suffer the death penalty and be respawned at a nearby safe spot. This effect remains consistent throughout the daytime, meaning solo players can die multiple times and re-emerge in the same way. Their character levels will keep decreasing until they hit level one, after which there are no more level deductions. If solo players die during the night, they’ll be hit with the ‘Defeat’ screen, meaning the run is over.

In both cases, the runes dropped by players can be collected from the spot of their death. However, there is a chance that nearby enemies can snatch them up before you. If you encounter this scenario, you’ll need to defeat the enemy responsible and retrieve your runes.
