1. World of Warcraft

15 Best MMORPG Games You Should PlayWorld of Warcraft is the supposed father of all MMORPGs and the genre itself, developed by Blizzard, it has garnered the most positive reviews for its amazing gameplay and an intriguing environment. The game allows you to choose your character, pick a class, and customize your character completely in different ways that you prefer. In order to gain experience and level up your character, you must complete quests.

You can either take the quests solo (which is quite hard) or you can join a party and do a multiplayer quest run along with your friends. You can also duke it out against other players in the PvP mode. World of Warcraft works on a subscription based payment model so in order to play you have to buy subscription cards or make the payment directly with your credit card to keep playing the game after the free trial period is over. Playing for up to level 20 is entirely free, but after that period you have to extend your subscription.

Path of Exile is everything you expected from a true sequel to the famous Diablo II. Diablo III definitely had a shaky start and didn’t do justice to Diablo II’s legacy. In this game, you start your journey in an unknown world and try to explore large areas including dangerous dungeons and monster-filled caves. You fight off hordes of monsters and other dark forces that are present in these areas and accumulate experience for killing monsters and completing quests.

You can team up with others and play together, but the main objective of the game is to give every single player their own isolated vast map to explore, you can either do that with your party or just go about it solo. The game is entirely free to play and you don’t have to use any money to gain an upper hand.

  • KamiDOTexe says:

Guild wars was never mmo either, it was all instance based save for hub locations, that’s all.

  • Is this article for real? says:

Ridiculous article with incorrect information. Do your research first next time.

  • SpentNub says:

Ultima Online came before WoW, and interestingly enough the servers are still running.

  • Beebom is clueless says:

Clearly, the author of this silly list has no clue what an MMORPG is… Path of Exile? Warframe?

Obviously, knowing the subject matter of what you are writing about is not required on this site; nor is even basic research done. The author just copy/pasted the term he saw on more reputable sites, and I guarantee cannot even answer what MMORPG stands for.

Of course, poor writing, lack of research, and pathetic subject knowledge is a common theme with gaming sites and so-called writers. I suppose that is why I am venting (overreacting) a bit here because I am sick of the low effort, low expectations, and overall mediocrity of gaming articles and information.

  • Bibor says:

Neverwinter Online has the best gameplay of all MMO-s. I just could play the games killing the same mobs as the classes’ fighting mechanics are very enjoyable. But the grind kills the joy after a time as gearing up your character in order to participate in high tier dungeons need a year’s grind if you are a casual player (about 2 hours a day). PVP is unbalanced and you need the best gear that takes years to grind.

  • Rai_The_Noblesse says:

Why isn’t Final Fantasy 14 mentioned? The Techradar at least mentioned FF14, even if only very shortly. (this list wasnt paied by western mmo companies??)

FF14 might not be the most “original” mmo (clearly inspired by WOW), but does quite a few things better than WOW and looks gorgeous. And has great combat and crafters, possibly the best in mmos.

    • Vanilla says:

FF14 WASN’T inspired by WOW….if you check you can clearly see that FFXI (the ancestor of the FF14) was run in the year 2000-2001 but wow was at the 2004…so who can be called “original” as you say?

      • RufusJFlywheel says:

Yes XI came before WoW. But XIV was definitely inspired by WoW! It was SE’s take on the “western” MMO. Where XI was a much more “hardcore” type MMO.

  • Anonymous Imp says:

Path of Exile shouldn’t be on this list because it isn’t an MMO; it’s an RPG. It lacks the “massive multiplayer” element which is what defines an MMO. While there are thousands of players online, you can only see about a dozen at a time in cities and you can’t even interact with any of them. You can only interact with other players who are in your, up to 6-man, party and combat is restricted to instanced zones. It is not open-world and all players are segregated. Path has the same structure as Diablo III and no one considers that an MMO, so there is no reason to consider Path one either. Some examples of true MMORPGs would be World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Black Desert Online and Guild Wars 2.
