The Black Rose Order began to make big moves from the first act of Arcane Season 2. It was evident that they were primarily after the Medarda family for some unknown reasons. Both the mother and daughter, Ambessa and Mel Medarda, were troubled by the evil shadow syndicate in the Arcane TV series. But what did they want from the Noxian warlord and her daughter? Why were they targeting Ambessa in Arcane? Well, with the conclusion of the series, we finally have the answer.
Spoiler Warning: This post includes heavy spoilers for Arcane Season 2, now out on Netflix.
Black Rose Wanted Ambessa Dead
It all started when Amara, a Guild Merchant turned out to be the assassin of the Black Rose Order. Although Amara failed to assassinate Ambessa, she made it clear that their organization was out to put an end to her plans. She also mentioned, “What you’ve (Ambessa) stolen is more precious than any gold.” While this statement initially confused the fans, we later learned that this was about Mel Medarda, the newest sorceress in the League of Legends universe.
The Black Rose killed Ambessa’s son, Kino Medarda, for the transgressions committed by Ambessa in Noxus. Ambessa holds the pride of her family higher and is willing to do anything for that. Thus, the mysterious Black Rose member who wanted to recruit Mel spilled the beans about why they wanted to kill Ambessa and why they wanted her daughter to do it.
Ambessa Was Considered the Catalyst of a Disastrous War
According to the mysterious member, they foresaw Ambessa’s quenchable desire to carve a legacy resulting in a catastrophe. She further compared this disaster to the time of the ancient rune wars which Heimerdinger once mentioned while talking about the Arcane in the animated series. Thus, the organization has been chasing the Noxian lady ever since to prevent the disastrous war from becoming a reality.
But their plans to exterminate Ambessa have always failed, and that is exactly why they wanted to recruit her daughter. They planned to use Mel to kill her mother as her origins led to her becoming a powerful Empath mage in the series. Just as they desired, they used Mel as a tool to catch her mother off-guard and ended up killing Ambessa inside the domain full of thorns.
Black Rose’s motives and their role haven’t been properly fleshed out in the story just yet. But their arrival in Arcane has sowed the seeds for future League of Legends spin-offs set in the Noxus. Thus, we can expect to learn more about the conflict between the Medarda family and the Black Rose in the future.
