In Short
  • Tron 3, titled Tron: Ares, is set to release on October 10, 2025
  • Jared Leto will be the protagonist of Tron 3 and will play a sentient AI being named Ares.
  • It is speculated that Tron: Ares is going to be a soft reboot of Tron rather than being a sequel of Tron: Legacy.

When we think about science fiction movies, one title that has always stood out setting a benchmark for sci-fi is the Tron franchise. The last time we got to see a movie from the franchise was Tron: Legacy in 2010, which was the sequel to the 1982 movie Tron. Now, after more than a decade, we are getting a third Tron movie titled Tron: Ares. So, in this article, let’s talk about the release date, cast, story details, and everything we know currently about Tron 3.

What Is the Tron 3 Release Date?

Tron 3 or Tron: Ares has been given a release date of October 10, 2025. This movie, according to the director Joachim Rønning, will bring back the fans to “The Grid” making us relive the tussle between the good and evil ‘programs’ that live there. Originally, the idea for this sequel was pitched way back in 2015 but was not greenlit by Disney.

Not much later, Disney realized the fanbase behind the Tron franchise when Disney Studios President of Music & Soundtracks Mitchell Leib gave us a confirmation of Tron 3 on Light The Fuse Podcast back in 2020. He even confirmed that the script for this movie was being written while a director for the new Tron movie was being looked for.

As of now, the latest news is that Tron: Ares has wrapped filming in May 2024 as shared by Rønning on Instagram. However, there is still a lot of post-production work left to do. Considering that the filming has been wrapped on time, any delays in release are highly unlikely.

Is There a Trailer for Tron 3?

Even though the filming of Tron 3 has been completed, there is no trailer for Tron: Ares at this point. Since the movie is set to release on October 10, 2025, we can expect the trailer for Tron Ares to come out in the final few months of 2024 or early 2025.

Even though the exact characters have not been revealed to us yet, we do have certain confirmed cast members for Tron 3. First off, in the lead role, we are going to see Jared Leto play the role of Ares, a sentient artificial intelligent being and along with him, Jeff Bridges will reprise his role as Clu. Even though Leto is a good actor, people are slightly concerned with his history of messing up in franchises, for instance, as Mobius in MCU and the Joker in DCEU.

However, I have faith in Jared because you can’t judge someone’s talents based on a few performances. It is no secret that Jared Leto has also won an Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club so as far as I think, everything will work out just fine.

Along with Leto and Jeff, other actors confirmed to join Tron Ares are Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Gillian Anderson. We also know that Greta Lee will be a part of the cast in the role of CEO of some huge tech firm. Could it be Dillinger Systems? Well, let’s just leave it right there.

What Is the Plot of Tron 3?

So, according to the official plot synopsis of Tron Ares, we will get to see Jared Leto’s Ares travel to the human world on a secret mission marking the first interaction of mankind with sentient artificial intelligence. This synopsis is contrary to the previous depictions we have seen in Tron movies where humans go into the world of Tron.

The sequel Tron: Legacy was supposed to involve forces from the world of Tron coming to the human world and launching a full-scale invasion. Now, it seems that Tron 3 will scrap that idea and show us a different story set in the same universe.

As of now, we have no confirmation of the appearance of Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde appearing as Quorra in Tron: Ares. Since, by the end of Tron Legacy, Quorra passed into the human world and became human, there should have been an appearance if the story was bridged to Tron: Legacy. This only strengthens the point that this movie can be a soft reboot rather than a sequel to Tron: Legacy.
