- Spell crafting can take your mage build to the next level in Oblivion Remastered.
- To access it, interact with the Altar of Spellmaking at the Arcane University or inside Frostcrag Spire.
- Keep an eye on the Magicka cost while crafting custom spells. Your character will be unable to cast the spell if the Magicka requirement is too high.
Spell crafting is arguably the best part of a pure mage build in Oblivion Remastered. If you’re well-versed in the arts of the arcane, the RPG lets you create custom spells using the incantations you know already. You can let your imagination run wild to mix and match spells, and see what comes out. However, there is a bit of depth to this mechanic, and it can also be difficult to access. To help you out, we’ve put together an Oblivion Remastered spell creation guide, with tips on how to create spells and some of the most powerful combinations you can create.
How to Access Spell Crafting in Oblivion Remastered
To create custom spells in Oblivion Remastered, you’ll need to find and interact with an Altar of Spellmaking. There are two such altars in the entire game:
- The Arcane University in Imperial City
- Frostcrag Spire, a player home near Bruma

Getting to the altar inside Arcane University is a tall ordeal since it’s tied to the Mages Guild questline. While you can glitch your way past the locked university gate, you’ll need a special key to access the Praxographical Center, which houses the altar. If you want to go this route, you’ll need to complete seven quests for the guild in each major city to collect letters of recommendation. Once you have all seven, return to the Raminus Polus and he’ll bestow upon you the rank of apprentice, allowing you to use the altar and much more.
The second altar sits inside Frostcrag Spire. This mysterious keep is tailor-made for a mage, and you access it as soon as you emerge from the Imperial City sewers. But to unlock its sections, you’ll need to spend a ton of coins and purchase them by speaking with Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium.
To unlock the altar, buy the Magetallow Candles Box from the merchant for around 3,200 coins and return to the spire. Once you’re inside, move towards the platform in the center of the hall, and you’ll find the Altar of Spellmaking on the left. Interact with it to place the candles, and you can now start spell crafting.
How to Create New Spells in Oblivion Remastered
After unlocking the altar, you’ll be greeted with the spell creation screen. On the left, you’ll find every spell effect your character has learned. Selecting them will activate the window on the right, alongside four modification options. These include:
- Range: Alters how the spell is cast
- Self – Affects only your character
- Touch – Must be cast directly on a target within reach
- Target – Projectile spell that has the specified effect on impact
- Magnitude: The strength of the effect. High Magnitude means the spell is more potent, but it also consumes more Magicka
- Area: The radius of the spell when cast. Magicka costs increase with the area
- Duration: How long the spell effects last for
You can tweak each property of a spell to your heart’s content and end up with some truly unique combinations. Keep in mind that creating a custom spell will cost a significant amount of coin, making this an expensive exercise. Also, make sure to keep an eye on your custom spell’s Magicka requirements since there’s no point in an incantation that your character is incapable of casting.
