How to Complete the Bravil Recommendation Quest in Oblivion Remastered

The Mages Guild questline is one of the best parts of Oblivion Remastered. It sees players climb the ranks of the mystical faction while battling Daedric deities, resolving political infighting, and completing numerous fetch quests. One of these involves Varon Vamori, an NPC with a reputation for troublemaking who is tied to the Bravil Recommendation quest required to join Arcane University formally. However, finding the NPC can be a bother since the game doesn’t point you in this evasive character’s direction. With this in mind, here’s where to find Varon Vamori in Oblivion Remastered and complete the Bravil Recommendation quest.

How to Complete the Bravil Recommendation Quest

To start the Bravil Recommendation quest in Oblivion Remastered, you’ll need to first head to the Arcane University in the Imperial City and talk to Raminus Polas to join the Mages Guild. The NPC will ask you to visit the Mages Guild chapter in every city and collect their recommendation. This can be done in any order, but for this guide, we’ll outline the steps for the Bravil Recommendation.

1. Talk to Kud-Ei

The first step in the quest is to fast travel to Bravil and go straight into the Mages Guild. You can find the building next to the Chapel near the city’s main gate. Once inside, talk to Kud-Ei, who can be found using the quest markers.

She’ll tell you about Ardaline, a fellow guild member whose staff has been stolen. And to retrieve it, you’ll need to talk to Varon Vamori. Kud-Ei also gives you a Beguile scroll to use on Vamori.

2. Find Varon Vamori

Varon Vamori can be found inside the Mages Guild building between 8 AM and 10 AM. If you’re at the guild during these times, wait for a few seconds in the lobby, and he will show up. Outside of this, he can be found in the Chapel or at his home located north of the guild. Vamori will exit the guild building after 10 AM, so you can also catch him walking to his next destination.

After finding him, cast the Beguile scroll on him and initiate a conversation. Make sure to pick the Ardaline dialogue option until it gets greyed out, and then ask him about the Mage’s Staff. He’ll come clean and reveal that he sold the staff to an NPC named Soris Arenim. Without using Beguile, you’ll need to increase his disposition towards you to make him talk manually.

3. Retrieve the Mage’s Staff

After talking to Vamori, head back to the guild and speak with Kud-Ei again. Tell her what you learned, and she’ll task you with negotiating with Soris Arenim to get the staff back. The NPC will also hand you three Beguile scrolls that can be used on Arenim.

Now, fast travel to the Imperial City, Talos Plaza District, and walk to Arenim’s house. Initiate a conversation with the NPC and raise his disposition to at least 70. This can be done manually or using the Beguile scrolls. You can now talk to him about the staff, and he’ll be open to returning it for 200 gold. If you’ve got the coin, pay up to collect the staff, and your job is nearly done.

Alternatively, you can avoid giving the NPC any money by stealing the staff. To do this, climb to the second floor of the house and open the drawers that are secured behind a hard lockpick. Picking locks can be tricky, so we recommend getting the Skeleton Key, which makes this activity a breeze. Once you’ve opened the drawers, grab the Mage’s Staff and fast travel back to Bravil.

4. Deliver the Staff

For the final step of the quest, go into the Mages Guild building and talk to Kud-Ei. She’ll thank you for retrieving the staff and give you the all-important recommendation. Besides this, you’ll also receive the Captivate spell as a reward.
