The Best Races and Origins to Pick in Oblivion Remastered

If you’re a newcomer to the high-fantasy world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, the prospect of selecting your character’s race will likely be confusing. For starters, you might be left scratching your head at the sight of the feline Khaljits or the reptilian Argonians. Then there are different types of Elves, intermixed with burly Orcs and valiant Nords, all of whom bring something unique to the table. Since you can only pick your character’s race once, we’re here to help you make the right decision. Here are the best races and origins in Oblivion Remastered.

Best Races in Oblivion Remastered

The RPG features 10 different races to pick from, alongside two origins that are new inclusions in the Oblivion Remaster. We’ve broken down the best races into the five most common playstyles to help streamline your decision.

Best All-Rounder Race

Top Attributes

  • 50 Intelligence
  • 50 Willpower
  • 50 Magicka Bonus
  • 40 Strength

Top Skills

  • +15 Conjuration
  • +15 Mysticism
  • +15 Restoration
  • +10 Illusion
  • +10 Alchemy
  • +10 Alteration

Ask any Oblivion veteran, and they’ll tell you that there’s no better middle ground than the Breton race. These human-elf hybrids are incredibly well-balanced, especially since they start with excellent base Intelligence and Willpower. They’re best used as spellcasters and come with a natural resistance to magic damage.

Additionally, the race’s base Conjuration, Mysticism, and Restoration skills are also pretty impressive. If you want to retain a bit of playstyle versatility and carry a sword in one hand and a Restoration spell in the other, a Breton with the Systres origin is the way to go.

Best Mage Race

Top Attributes

  • 100 Magicka Bonus
  • 50 Intelligence
  • 40 Willpower
  • 40 Endurance

Top Skills

  • +15 Alteration
  • +15 Destruction
  • +15 Mysticism
  • +10 Conjuration
  • +10 Illusion

Casting spells has never looked better than in the remaster due to top-notch particle effects and hand animations. So, if you’re aiming for a full mage build, a High Elf with the Auridon origin would be our pick. The race excels in the base stats for every school of magic, and it also offers the highest Magicka pool possible when paired with the Atronach Birthsign.

With that being said, your build will be a glass cannon, as High Elves are weak against fire, frost, and shock damage. However, you can always summon a tank or a few skeletons to take enemy aggro off your character.

Best Warrior/Knight Race

Top Attributes

  • 50 Endurance
  • 40 Strength
  • 40 Agility
  • 40 Speed

Top Skills

  • +15 Athletics
  • +15 Blade
  • +15 Blunt
  • +10 Heavy Armor
  • +10 Light Armor

It might be vanilla, but nothing beats a classic warrior archetype built around strength and designed to settle arguments with a sword. For this purpose, there’s no better choice than Redguards with the Alik’r Desert origin. These hardened warriors are formidable units in combat thanks to bonuses such as +15 Blade, +15 Blunt, and +15 Athletics.

They also come with a natural resistance to disease and poison, meaning your character can withstand plenty of punishment.

Best Stealth Race

Top Attributes

  • 50 Agility
  • 40 Intelligence
  • 40 Speed
  • 40 Strength

Top Skills

  • +15 Acrobatics
  • +15 Hand-to-Hand
  • +10 Sneak
  • +10 Security
  • +10 Blade

If you’re all about sneaking into restricted areas, discreetly nabbing coins from pockets, and thriving when the sun goes down, look no further than Oblivion’s resident felines, Khajiit. The race is known for its intelligence and agility.

They’re also blessed with nocturnal vision, so you can easily see in the dark. In terms of bonuses, they come with a +15 in Acrobatics, +10 in Sneak, and +15 in Hand-to-Hand, which is great for stealth attacks. In conclusion, Khajiit with the Anequina origin is the ideal stealth-assassin.

Best Necromancer/Conjurer race

Top Attributes

  • 50 Speed
  • 40 Intelligence
  • 40 Agility
  • 40 Strength

Top Skills

  • +15 Destruction
  • +15 Mysticism
  • +15 Blade
  • +10 Blunt

The Mages Guild has banned Necromancy, but you don’t care about that. Spawning Daedra and the Undead to do your bidding is simply too irresistible. If this fits your description, then Dark Elves (Dunmer) with the Vvardenfell origin are the race suited to your specific needs. The race has a natural affinity for Destruction magic, but is also handy with a blade and a bow. More importantly, they can summon ancestral ghosts for aid, which is precisely what the playstyle is all about.

With that being said, Dark Elves’ base Conjuration is on the lower side, but this can easily be upgraded over time. The best way to use Dunmers as Conjurers is to rotate between sending out your minions to dish out some damage, and biding some time before landing an attack yourself.

And these are the best races and origins to pick in Oblivion Remastered. Depending on the character you want to build, these races are tailor-made for your preferences. If we’re missing a key playstyle, be sure to let us know in the comments.
