Motorola has finally announced the Moto G6 series at an event in Brazil, months after the phones first leaked in their entirety. The new Moto G6 phones carry forward the legacy of the G series mid-range phones, and come in three variants – from low-end to high-end – Moto G6 Play, Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus. All three run Android 8.0 Oreo, and come with a water repellent coating as well, which is a nice bonus in this segment.
Moto G6 Plus
The top-end Moto G6 Plus features a 5.9-inch IPS panel with a modern 18:9 aspect ratio display in Full HD+ (1080p) resolution. The processor here is part of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, and is clocked at 2.2GHz, plus there’s a choice of 4GB or 6GB RAM options along with 64GB internal storage, which is further expandable up to 128GB. The battery is 3200 mAh unit on the G6 Plus, which sounds disappointing so we will have to see how it stacks up to the competition in this price range.

Overall the Moto G6 Plus has an inoffensive design, and there’s not much that Motorola has done to make it stand out from the last-gen models. Touches like the curved 3D glass on the back should make the phone look easy to handle. Like all phones this year, face unlock is a standard feature on the Moto G6 Plus, while the fingerprint scanner is on the front.
On the camera side, Moto G6 Plus has a 12MP+5MP dual rear camera with Dual Autofocus Pixel technology, and f/1.7 aperture size and 1.4um pixel size on the bigger 12MP sensor. This should allow things like bokeh or portrait mode as well as other effects on photos. The main camera is capable of recording 4K videos, but the front 8MP camera is restricted to 1080p recordings.
The Moto G6 Plus is going on sale in Brazil and Mexico to start with. India and other countries are likely to get it in May or later. The starting price is 299 euros or around Rs 24,000, which would be similar to the Moto X4 currently. .
Moto G6
Funnily enough neither the Moto G6 official page nor Motorola’s blog specifies the SoC of the Moto G6. It simply is mentioned as Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with an octa-core processor clocked at 1.8Ghz. It’s likely to be the Snapdragon 450 SoC.
The Moto G6 has a 5.7-inch Full HD so-called Max Vision display, which indicates the 18:9 aspect ratio. Again like the Moto G6 Plus, this one also gets the 3D glass back design. It will come in 3GB RAM and 32GB storage or 4GB RAM and 64GB storage options, with microSD card support.

The G6 comes with the same fingerprint scanner on the front, face unlock feature and rear cameras as the G6 Plus, but there’s no 4K recording. The battery is a 3000 mAh unit, with a Type-C USB port for charging. The Moto G6 is priced at $249, or around Rs 16,000, and will be available in most regions over the next few months.
Moto G6 Play
And finally, there’s the low-end Moto G6 Play, which has a 5.7-inch HD+ resolution (720p) Max Vision display and 18:9 aspect ratio. The highlight here is the large battery size with a 4000 mAh unit powering the phone.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 SoC is under the hood with the processor clocked at 1.4GHz. The phone has a 13MP rear single camera and a 5MP selfie camera. It will launch in 2GB/3GB RAM and 16/32GB storage configurations, which is again expandable to 128GB with a microSD card. The starting price of the G6 Play is set at $199, which is around Rs 13,000 in India. Again, Motorola has priced this phone slightly higher than last year’s model.
