In Short
  • Ghost Stance ability lets Atsu enter a possessed state where she can defeat waves of enemies easily.
  • The ability carries forward from Ghost of Tsushima and works similarly to the former title.
  • You can only unlock this once you're halfway through the story.

In Ghost of Yotei, combat takes center stage as players from the get-go have a bunch of sword stances to play around with, even if they use a single katana. But it’s the game’s wide variety of weapons arsenal that opens up different techniques and combat styles that Atsu can learn and improvise during her battles with enemies.

Throughout her combat, she unleashes an Onryo’s Howl ability to scare her enemies and performs a couple of quick kills with her katana, which glorifies her terror among Saito’s forces. However, longtime fans of Ghost of Tsushima know that it’s the Ghost Stance that’s the ultimate ability, which really cuts to the bone and sends a shinobi into a possessed state, and gets multiple kills done instantly.

The ability makes a return in Ghost of Yotei, and you can unlock it in the game to send Atsu into a state of adrenaline where she holds no prisoners in dismembering her enemies and getting up close and personal with her katana. Here’s how to unlock the Ghost Stance easily.

How to Unlock Atsu’s Ghost Stance in Ghost of Yotei Easily

  • Tamura Estate Map in Ghost of Yotei
  • Sneaking Past Guards in Tamura Estate in Ghost of Yotei

To unlock the Ghost Stance, you’ll need to start Chapter II: The Onryo in the main story of Ghost of Yotei. From there, you’ll need to kick off the mission where Jubei, Atsu, and Oyuki go after Lord Saito’s Son, The Spider, who is hiding in Lord Tamura’s Estate in the Oshima Coast region.

Meet Oyuki at Lord Tamura’s Estate to kick off the mission, from where you’ll need to sneak past Saito guards and head to the guesthouses. Perform any assassinations quietly and don’t raise any alarms. Once you reach the guesthouses, you’ll meet the performers and, in a cutscene, Atsu and Oyuki will disguise themselves as Shamisen performers to entertain The Spider and Saito’s men.

Once you get past all the guards and into the main performance arena, a cutscene will trigger where The Spider will provoke Atsu by reminding her of the childhood memory where he and the Yotei Six killed her family. Enraged Atsu will then get a prompt right before combat to press the L3+R3 buttons to unleash the Ghost Stance.

  • Ghost Stance Unlock in Ghost of Yotei
  • Ghost Stance Initiated in Ghost of Yotei
  • Using Ghost Stance to Kill in Ghost of Yotei

As soon as you smash those buttons, hit the attack button (Square) close to an enemy to perform Ghost Stance, thus unleashing three quick strikes with your dual katanas to eliminate them. You’ll be able to perform the Ghost Stance against a maximum of three enemies or a single enemy three times.

While normal soldiers will get killed instantly, bosses will get affected by greater damage than usual, and you may need to fully focus on them if you want to slaughter them completely. Ghost Stance and Onryo’s Howl share the same kill streak. If you manage to eliminate seven enemies without taking any damage and push your luck, you’ll unlock Ghost Stance and then unleash the true power of The Onryo with it.
