GTA 5 features a lengthy main story that can easily take you upwards of 60 hours to play through. It focuses on the criminal escapades of three protagonists, all of whom get multiple moments to shine. While the missions are still pretty formulaic in structure, they’ll have you doing all sorts of things in Los Santos, and finishing them remains the most satisfying way to make a fortune in the game. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of all the story and side missions available in GTA 5.
How Many GTA 5 Missions Are There in Total?
GTA 5 features a total of 111 missions. These are broken down into 69 main missions, 37 Strangers & Freaks side missions, and five Assassination missions given by Lester.
The main missions progress the story forward and are also responsible for gradually unlocking side content. As for Stranger & Freaks, these start as random encounters and then develop into mini-stories centered around some truly wacky characters. Each of the three protagonists receives a selection of this mission type that can only be completed while playing as them.
Lastly, Lester’s Assassinations are also a part of the side content and can only be undertaken by Franklin. Completing these missions can net you heaps of cash, but only if you follow the steps we’ve laid out in our GTA 5 Stock Market guide.
All GTA 5 Story Missions
The game’s main story mostly plays out like a thrilling romp, that’s occasionally stagnated by a trailing mission here or there. From racing cars and ransacking Vinewood sets to setting up elaborate heists and practicing yoga, the variety of missions is substantial across the board, and it helps the 60-hour runtime zip by in a flash.
For newcomers, knowing how to start a GTA 5 mission is as easy as opening up the game’s map and setting a marker on a letter icon. Depending on the mission giver, the icons will feature different letters. Examples in the early game include ‘S’ for Simeone and ‘L’ for Lamar.
However, you’ll run into points in the story where no icons will be visible on the map. In these cases, you’ll either have to wait for a phone call from a character or switch to a different protagonist and check out the missions available to them.
