- The Skeleton Key can be found in a buried chest within the Nightmare Neighborhood POI in Fortnite.
- The Secret Room that can be opened using the Skeleton Key is found in the basement of the house located in Nightmare Neighborhood.
- The quality of loot you find solely depends on which Secret Room you open in Fortnite.
The Skeleton Key was added with the Fortnite update 42.30 on October 1 for Fortnitemares 2026. It is a master key of sorts, able to open different types of locks, especially those that lead to Secret Rooms in Fortnite. If we’ve piqued your interest, here’s everything you need to know about the Skeleton Key in Fortnite, how to get it, and how to use it to open Secret Rooms.
Where to Find the Skeleton Key in Fortnite: Map Location
To find the Skeleton Key in Fortnite, you need to dig up a buried chest found within a random mausoleum that’s located in the graveyard. It is adjacent to the newly added Nightmare Neighborhood POI on the Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 map.
There are a total of three mausoleums that you can find inside the graveyard, but only two of them have buried chests within. We’ve attached some images to help you see exactly where you need to go to dig up the chest and open it to get the Skeleton Key in Fortnite.
That said, the Skeleton Key is a unique item that’s limited to the Nightmare Neighborhood POI (it spawns nowhere else on the island) and will be vaulted when Fortnitemares 2026 ends. You can find two Skeleton Keys in every Fortnite Zero Build or Battle Royale match.
How to Find the Secret Room in Fortnite
Once you have the Skeleton Key in Fortnite, equip it and head inside the main building that’s located next to the graveyard. After entering, take the first left, open the door, and go down two flights of stairs. We recommend that you equip the Skeleton Key, as it points the way, making it easier for you to reach your destination.
At the bottom of the staircase, three doors appear in front of you. Using your Skeleton Key, you can open any one of these doors in Fortnite. The choice is completely yours, and there are no wrong answers. However, we strongly suggest you only open the door that the Skeleton Key has marked.
Don’t worry about jump scares, as Epic Games hasn’t introduced any in this location with the Fortnite update 42.30.
Which Secret Room to Open Using the Skeleton Key in Fortnite?
So, you don’t want to risk opening the ‘wrong’ secret door in Fortnite using the Skeleton Key, do you? Well, unfortunately, as we mentioned, there are no wrong answers. The prize or loot behind each door is randomized in every match. Which means there’s no guarantee of what you find. To that end, here’s what we found behind each door:
- Door 1: Common weapon and ammo.
- Door 2: Rare Chests (x2).
- Door 3: Regular Chests (x2).
To maximize your odds of opening the door that leads to the room filled with rare chests, we suggest listening carefully for audio cues. Turn on the “Visualized Sound” option from the menu to improve your odds of opening the ‘right’ room every time. If you’re lucky, you can get one of the many Exotic weapons in Fortnite by opening the rare chests.
That’s all you need to know about the Skeleton Key in Fortnite and how to use it to get high-tier loot. Remember to make use of audio cues to open the door that has the most loot behind it. If all else fails, you can always go and open a Vault in Fortnite to get powerful items/weapons.
Let us know in the comments below which Secret Room’s door you opened first using the Skeleton Key in Fortnite and what you found behind it.
