In Short
  • The death penalty in Dune Awakening is different depending on the cause of your death.
  • After fatal damage from AI or players, you’ll have a short time to revive. If you die, all your gear drops and can be recovered from the spot—unless rival players loot it first.

Dune Awakening is a brand-new MMORPG set in Frank Herbert’s popular sci-fi universe. The title sees players explore the sandy dunes of Arrakis in search of the Fremen, while also partaking in standard MMORPG affairs such as resource gathering, item crafting, and some PvPvE combat. Players familiar with the source material will know that the Dune universe is packed with dangerous creatures and fearsome foes. Combined with the scalding sun, there’s no shortage of ways to die in Awakening. This begs the obvious question: What happens when you die in the game? If you’re looking for a comprehensive answer, here’s what happens when you die in Dune Awakening.

Dune Awakening Death Penalty Explained

The death penalty in Dune Awakening differs depending on the circumstances of your demise. The key difference in every case is how your gear is handled. In some cases, you’ll be able to retrieve it by returning to your death spot. In others, you’ll lose the items in your backpack, such as Solari, Spice, crafting materials, and ammo permanently.

No matter how you die, you can respawn at your base, near your vehicle, at the location of a respawn beacon, or at a checkpoint if you die during a quest or inside a dungeon.

What Happens When You Die a Normal Death in Dune Awakening

If you suffer fatal damage at the hands of other players or AI enemies, you’ll initially enter a ‘Down But Not Out‘ (DBNO) state. During this limited period, your teammates can revive you, and you can even self-revive if you have ample water reserves.

If the DBNO period runs out and you succumb to death due to an AI enemy, your equipped gear will remain with you on respawn. However, the various items in your backpack will be dropped at the location of your death with a skull icon. So you can trek back and retrieve them.

In the case of being killed by rival players, the killer can loot the contents of your backpack, which could make retrieving it pointless. Like in PvE deaths, all your equipped gear will remain with you when you respawn. But if the Landsraad decree has been issued, your opponent can also loot your weapons, armor, and tools.

What Happens When You Die to Sandworms or Coriolis Storms in Dune Awakening

If you’re swallowed to death by a giant Sandworm or devoured by a Coriolis Storm, you will lose all your items permanently. This includes all your equipped gear, the contents of your backpack, and even your vehicle if you’re caught riding it.

So, if you don’t fancy starting from scratch, keep an eye out for Shai-Hulud. He’s frankly impossible to miss. As for the storms, they only occur in the Deep Desert region once a week, a late-game area most players will rarely visit.
