How to Transcribe Google Meet Calls in Real Time

Google Meet is one of the leading web conferencing platforms in 2021. Although Google Meet offers live captions, you can’t use it to save transcriptions. If you’re someone who spends a lot of time attending Google Meet meetings, here are two tools you can use to transcribe your Google Meet meetings to seamlessly keep track and review them later.

Transcribe Google Meet Calls in Real Time

We’ve covered two Google Chrome extensions to help you transcribe Google Meet calls and meetings. You can choose one from these based on your preference. Without further delay, let’s get started.

1. Using Otter.ai

Speech to text transcription applications maker Otter.ai recently released a Chrome extension that brings live transcription support to Google Meet. With Otter.ai’s browser extension, you can view the full transcript as they happen, choose to view closed captions, and share the transcript with your team after the meeting.

1. To get started, download Otter.ai’s extension from Chrome Web Store. After downloading, open Google Meet and click on Otter extension’s icon in the top right corner. Do note that you should open Google Meet for the extension’s options to appear. If you don’t, clicking the icon will do nothing.

2. You need an Otter account to use this extension. Sign up for an account if you don’t have one yet or click on the login button if you have used Otter before. You can create a new account by clicking on the ‘Sign up for FREE’ button. You have the flexibility to use your Google account, Microsoft account, Apple account, or email address to sign up.

3. Once you’ve created the account, you’ll see a ‘Record’ button when you access the extension. Click on it to start the recording process.

4. As you can see below, you’ll see live transcriptions for the meeting. This should prove helpful to efficiently stay tuned or review important points later. You can also click on the ‘CC’ button to open the closed captions panel. Once the meeting ends, click on the Pause button to resume or stop recording.

5. Otter automatically saves the transcription to your account. You can access it from the ‘My Conversations‘ section available in the left sidebar. Here, you will see the transcriptions of all your recorded Google Meet meetings.

6. You can now open any of the meeting transcriptions and choose to share, export as text, audio, or delete them. To access the export options, click on the vertical three dots menu in the top right corner.

Note: Otter supports Zoom meeting transcriptions too, but accessing that feature requires a paid plan. You can avail a month’s free trial to try it out if you’re interested.

2. Using Tactiq

Tactiq is another extension you can use to manage Google Meet transcriptions. You even get a highlight tool with Tactiq to help you quickly mark and access important segments in the meeting.

1. Download and install Tactiq’s extension from Chrome Web Store. After the installation is complete, login using your Google account.

2. After switching on the ‘Turn on captions’ button within Google Meet, you’ll see the transcripts in a dedicated popup window. You can now use the highlight tool to mark important points. To highlight, all you have to do is click on a text.

3. Click on the Google Docs icon in the transcription management tool to view the output in Google Docs. As mentioned earlier, you’ll have quick access to your highlights in the Google Docs file.

4. You can also choose to export the transcription right from the extension without opening Google Docs. To do so, click on the extension and choose ‘Export as’. The available exporting options are clipboard, text file, Tactiq workspace, and Google Docs.
