Whenever a new Tron movie drops, fans can’t help but ask the big questions. Who’s back, who’s missing, and how much of the legacy is Disney willing to carry into the future? With Tron: Ares on the horizon, one name has been at the center of speculation: Sam Flynn. The hero of Tron: Legacy, played by Garrett Hedlund, felt like the natural torchbearer of the franchise. Director Joachim Rønning hasn’t left fans much room to dream here. In interviews, he’s been absolutely clear that Sam Flynn isn’t part of Tron: Ares’ story. He described the absence of Sam Flynn and Quorra as both a creative choice and a practical one. Instead of chasing the past, Ares puts its focus on Jared Leto’s rogue program stepping into the real world and Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn returning to anchor the legacy.

However, not all hope is lost since in past interviews, Garrett Hedlund’s spoken warmly about Tron: Ares, calling it a project he’d love to be involved with. But there’s a difference between enthusiasm and confirmation.

No deals have been announced, no surprise set photos have leaked, and for now, Sam Flynn remains firmly outside the cast of Tron Ares. However, if Headlund wants to return to the franchise, there is a chance that he might show up in some future projects, but as of now, things seem to be pretty clear.
