- In Dead Rails, horses can spawn in groups, be mounted by outlaws or Soldier Zombies, be found at the barn, or spawn with a Cowboy class.
- Taming the horses will require a saddle, which can be bought for 50 cash from the General Store or found for free at the barn.
- The horses are of incredible help and can help you outrun any enemy in the game.
In the world of Dead Rails, where almost everyone has been turned into monsters like Zombies, Vampires, and Werewolves, you will need to be fast. Thankfully, some creatures like horses remain unaffected. As such, Dead Rails players can tame horses and use them to make their way to escape. However, getting these animals to behave is easier said than done. Let us simplify the process as we show you how to get a horse in Dead Rails right here.
How to Get a Horse in Dead Rails
In Dead Rails, horses usually spawn in various ways. However, the process of taming one remains the same. You simply require a Saddle that you carefully place on it, and you’re done. However, getting a saddle also needs some work, which we have explained further down below. With that said, the best ways to get a horse in Dead Rails are:
1. Tame a Wild Horse
The easiest way to find a horse in Dead Rails is through the wild herds that spawn in the game. While the horses are easy to spot, they are tricky to stop. Wild horses run at high speeds and can easily outrun the players.

To tame a wild horse in Dead Rails, try to corner it in an area where it cannot escape. The best places are your own train or a building’s wall. Once you have it locked down, simply place your saddle on the horse to ride it.
Moreover, there’s a 1% chance of a Unicorn in Dead Rails spawning among all the horses in the game. If you can spot one, sack it quickly since it can sell for a whopping 250 cash.
2. Steal from the Outlaws
This method to get a horse in Dead Rails is brutal but action-packed. Just like herds, wild bandits spawn near the railroad. These outlaws chase after your train with their own horses. So, to nick a horse from here, simply shoot the bandits and get on the animal to ride away.

This way, you can claim their horses and use the bodies of the outlaws to get the bounty rewards. Like the outlaws, you can also find the zombie soldiers riding the horses inside Fort Construction. However, raiding this fort won’t be easy, and you’ll need powerful weapons and gear for that.
3. Get One from the Barn
Finally, one last way to get these animals is from a barn. This structure is rare and a bit far away from the railroad. The barn can have wild and tamed horses, a saddle, and a cart.

So, if you’re only interested in getting a horse for yourself or your teammate, consider raiding this structure since it doesn’t serve any other purpose and consists of junk items.
Apart from the above spawning rules, there’s another way to get a Horse in Dead Rails. Selecting the Cowboy Class at the Tailor NPC before entering a game can get you a free horse and a saddle on your first spawn.
How to Get a Saddle in Dead Rails
As mentioned above, taming horses in Dead Rails requires a saddle. Thankfully, it’s easy enough to get one. A saddle can be bought from the General Store for 50 cash at various checkpoints, or you can get one free from the barn.
Once you find a horse without a saddle, follow the steps we mentioned at the beginning. So go ahead and corner a horse and put a saddle on it. And just like that, you’ve gotten a horse.
Furthermore, the cart we discussed earlier, found in the barn, can be attached to your horse’s back to serve as a secondary movable storage. You can weld this item in Dead Rails and place some extra loot on it as well. Alternatively, you can put a Maxim Turret on the cart to defend robustly when raiding risky areas like the Fort Construction or the Castle.
