What would you do to find true love? That’s a question one should ask Ted Mosby while he narrates to his children the beloved story of How I Met Your Mother. The show ran for nine seasons, and for the most part, it is a timeless classic; however, How I Met Your Mother might just rank in the top 5 when it comes to delivering some of the worst endings seen in television history. So, if you have a similar love-hate relationship with this show as I do, you might probably wonder where the cast of How I Met Your Mother is now, so here is everything you need to know about them.
1. Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby
Josh Radnor led in How I Met Your Mother as Ted Mosby. He is an architect working in New York City, and while he’s at it, he is in a constant search for true love in the city. He falls in love with Robin and even dates her for a while. However, throughout the series, he never moved on from Robin which led to the much-looked-down ending of How I Met Your Mother.
Even though it seems that Josh is the one narrating the story, in truth, the story is narrated by Bob Saget, known for his role in Full House. After the conclusion of How I Met Your Mother, Josh Radnor appeared in Mercy Street (2016) as Dr. Jedediah Foster, followed by Fleishman Is in Trouble (2022) and then in Hunters (2020-2023). Later on, he got married to a clinical psychologist named Jordana Jacobs in 2024. Most recently, Josh Radnor appeared in a movie titled Ramona at Midlife, which has an 8.3 rating on IMDb.
2. Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson
Neil Patrick Harris appears as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother and is the definition of a perfect wingman. Not only that, Barney was an absolute ladies’ man and always wore sharp suits, living his life strictly enforced by the “Bro-Code”.
After the conclusion of How I Met Your Mother, Neil Patrick Harris appeared in A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017) as Count Olaf and also appeared in Matrix: Resurrections (2021). He also had a cameo in a spinoff of HIMYM titled How I Met Your Father (2022) as Barney Stinson. Most recently, he appeared in Uncoupled (2022) as the protagonist.
3. Cobie Smulders as Robin Scherbatsky
Cobie Smulders appears in the cast of How I Met Your Mother as Robin Scherbatsky. She lives in New York but is a proud Canadian, something Barney is seen making fun of constantly. Robin is a reporter and also a love interest of Ted literally throughout the show.
Before the final season of How I Met Your Mother was released, Cobie Smulders appeared as Agent Maria Hill in Avengers (2012) and continued to play the role before her character was killed in Marvel’s Secret Invasion in 2023. She also appeared in a TV show called Friends from College (2017) and in How I Met Your Father (2022). Cobie Smulders last appeared on screen in Shrinking, a TV show released in 2024 but her role was limited to just one episode.
4. Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen
Jason Segel takes up the role of Marshall Eriksen, who is married to Lily. Marshall, Lily, and Ted have been friends since college. He starts the show as a corporate lawyer but, by concluding seasons of How I Met Your Mother, becomes a New York State Supreme Court judge.
After saying goodbye to How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segel appeared in Our Friend, a film released in 2019, and in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022). Jason Segel most recently appeared on Apple TV+’s Shrinking (2023) and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for this very role.
5. Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin
Alyson Hannigan appears in How I Met Your Mother as Lily Aldrin, and overall, she is the nicest and kindest of characters, that is until someone (usually Marshall) manages to get on her nerves. Initially, she was a kindergarten teacher, but later on became an art consultant for The Captain. After How I Met Your Mother, Alyson lent her voice to Claire Clancy for Fancy Nancy (2018).
She also appeared in the live-action Kim Possible movie (2019) as Doctor Ann Possible. Most recently, she tried her hand at reality TV shows while competing in Season 32 of Dancing With the Stars (2023), where she secured the fifth position.
6. Cristin Milioti as Tracy McConnell
Cristin Milioti was the big suspense of How I Met Your Mother. Her appearance was that of the “Mother” in the story and was teased multiple times across seasons of the beloved show. Cristin appeared as Tracy McConnell in the cast of How I Met Your Mother, who eventually married Ted but sadly passed away due to an undisclosed disease. Her death was the reason Ted started telling his kids the story of how he met Tracy.
Among all the cast members of How I Met Your Mother, I believe that Cristin Milioti had the most decorated career. She appeared in critically acclaimed projects like The Mindy Project (2012), Fargo (2014), Made for Love (2021), and The Resort (2022). Most recently, Cristin Milioti joined the DC Elseworlds by appearing as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin (2024), which, in my opinion, is her best acting performance so far.
7. David Henrie as Luke Mosby
David Henrie appeared in How I Met Your Mother’s cast as Ted’s son, Luke Mosby. He is most known for appearing in Wizards of Waverly Place as Justin Russo. David might not have explored acting further but made his directorial debut with This Is the Year (2020).
He also appeared as young Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, in his biopic Regan (2024). Most recently, he came back to the role of Justin Russo in the reboot of Wizards of Waverly Place titled Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, released in 2024.
8. Lyndsy Fonseca as Penny Mosby
Lyndsy Fonseca appears as Penny Mosby in How I Met Your Mother. She is Ted’s daughter, who, along with her brother Luke, is listening to him narrate the story of how he met Tracy. Following the conclusion of the show, Lyndsy appeared in Agent Carter (2015) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (2020), and that’s about it with her appearances following How I Met Your Mother.
