Agatha All Along: Who Is Mephisto in Marvel?

Agatha All Along is finally here with its much-awaited Episode 3, and like the first two episodes, this one also featured some fantastic easter eggs. However, the one that caught everyone’s attention was the mention of Mephisto.

Ever since the concept of magic was introduced in the MCU, everyone thought that they would see Mephisto appear in any of the projects. Initially, the fandom was sure that the Marvel villain was responsible for Wanda’s state in WandaVision. However, the villain turned out to be Agatha, which was an amazing twist, for sure, but it did leave some fans disappointed, especially those who were expecting Mephisto to make an entry in the MCU.

That being said, Marvel Studios is finally taking that direction with Agatha All Along, as the villain was mentioned in the latest episode. If you’re wondering who this villain is and how big of a threat he can be to the heroes, we’ve got you covered.

Mephisto’s Origin in Marvel Comics

Mephisto is believed to have been born before time; thus, his true origin is only open to speculation. However, to sum it up, Mephisto was born after the death of Nemesis, the entity that existed before time and created the entire Cosmos. Basically, Mephisto was born exactly when Infinity Stones were created.

Mephisto is the ruler of a dark realm, which he describes as “Hell.” However, the realm under his rule isn’t exactly the biblical Hell, and Mephisto isn’t Satan, either. Mephisto is believed to be the one who corrupted Adam and Eve’s minds, not because he wanted them to be punished by the “God,” but because he wanted to trap their souls in his version of Hell.

Over the years, Mephisto has gone against several Marvel heroes, including Iron Man. In fact, it was Mephisto who created the first Ghost Rider by bonding him with the Spirit of Vengeance. Also, it was Mephisto who made a deal with Norman Osborn, granting him financial success for the soul of his son, Harry. Like that, Mephisto has appeared in different eras and encountered almost every Marvel character you could think of.

However, one important thing to note is that Mephisto is directly linked to his realm, and he grows weaker if he’s separated from the realm for too long. That is why he uses his agents, or demons, to do his bidding.

He grows stronger by trapping more human souls in his realm, and for that, he preys on the emotionally weak and vulnerable humans. However, instead of doing that himself, he uses his agents. Interestingly, we hear a mention of Mephisto’s agents in the latest episode of Agatha All Along.

Mephisto’s Powers and Abilities

Mephisto is a supernatural entity, so he clearly holds tremendous power. He and his realm feed off the evil in the Human world. That is why he always acted like a fuel to the fire during times of war. He flaunts supernatural strength, stamina, and speed, which makes it incredibly difficult for anyone to defeat him. Also, Doctor Strange or Wanda’s magic would be meaningless in front of Mephisto, especially if they were fighting him in his realm.

Not only can he travel between realms, but he also changes his physical form. He can appear as a normal investor to manipulate Norman Obsorn or appear as a snake to corrupt the minds of Adam and Eve. In his actual form, Mephisto appears as Satan, but it’s hard to say if that’s his true form.

Mephisto has several Demon underlings working under him, and he can summon them at will. He can manipulate matter, create illusions, reverse time, and even change reality.

Mephisto’s Weaknesses

Honestly, there’s no limit to Mephisto’s powers, and he can’t be killed whatsoever. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t be defeated. The only way to defeat Mephisto is to keep him away from his realm long enough for him to grow weak.

Also, it’s important to note that Mephisto can’t directly harm beings from other realities or dimensions. He can’t directly go to Asgard and fight Thor or Loki. Similarly, he can’t trap anyone’s soul in his realm without the person’s will. It’s like the “Deals at Crossroad,” where he needs the person to submit to his demands to trap their souls in hell for eternity.

For instance, Mephisto couldn’t have done anything if Norman Osbron rejected his demands and refused to trade his son’s soul. That is why hatred, jealousy, revenge, or greed are the greatest tools for Mephisto. He uses these human feelings to manipulate someone and trade their souls in return for someone they want.
