You can always use your iPhone or Apple Watch to make the payments. Recently, more and more vendors have started accepting Apple Pay. However, some major retail giants still don’t accept Apple Pay, and it seems they never will. In this article, we’ve answered the most frequently asked question- “Does Walmart accept Apple Pay?”. We’ll also tell you a trick on how to use Apple Pay in Walmart.

Can I Use Apple Pay at Walmart

Unfortunately, Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay. So, you can’t pay with Apple Pay in any Walmart store directly. Despite the popularity of Apple Pay, especially in the past few years, Walmart doesn’t show any interest in supporting this payment method.

When launched back in 2014, Apple Pay attracted a lot of users. In fact, many regular Walmart shoppers have asked the merchant to add Apple Pay to its list of accepted payment methods. However, even after repeated requests, Walmart still doesn’t accept Apple Pay at self-checkout.

Therefore, no matter which iPhone model you own, there’s no way to pay at Walmart using Apple Wallet. It’s worth knowing that it isn’t only about Apple Pay, Walmart doesn’t take several other mobile payment methods like Samsung Pay and Google Pay. Instead, the retail giant encourages customers to use its custom mobile wallet- Walmart Pay.

Why won’t Walmart Accept Apple Pay

Walmart has a mix of strategic and financial decisions not to accept Apple Pay at any of its online or offline stores. First, Walmart wants users to use its proprietary mobile payment solution- the Walmart Pay app. Back in 2017, Walmart claimed that its Walmart app was far more popular than Apple Pay. It used the Walmart app’s assumed popularity to explain why it doesn’t accept Apple Pay or any other third-party payment app like Google Pay. Well, this explanation made much sense in 2017 but doesn’t feel very relatable in 2024, when Apple Pay is extremely popular.

Second, it seems Walmart doesn’t want to pay transaction fees that would come along with Apple Pay. Considering the large number of everyday transactions at Walmart’s online and offline stores, this small transaction fee would add to a large sum over time. Since Walmart is known for offering items at low prices, introducing Apple Pay might affect the overall equation. So, Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay to cut down additional costs and keep its prices low.

Therefore, no matter how popular Apple Pay is, Walmart isn’t likely to overturn its decision, at least, not anytime soon.
