Sony Finally Starts Testing Fortnite Cross-Play on PS4

Remember when Fortnite launched on the Nintendo Switch and a bunch of PS4 players were left shell-shocked to find that their PS4 accounts could not be used on the Nintendo Switch? That was horrible, and Sony doubled down on this policy with random claims about how the experience is best on the PS4 anyway yada yada yada. The point is, Sony has now finally decided that it should at least try to give cross-play capabilities to Fortnite players on the PS4.

In a new blog post, Sony has said that the company is going to be beta testing cross-play capabilities for Fortnite that will allow players to share gameplay, progression, and purchases across the PS4, Android, iOS, Xbox One, Windows, Mac, and Nintendo Switch.

This is a huge deal for people who have been playing Fortnite on PS4, because so far they were locked out of cross-play with other platforms, and they couldn’t even sign in with their accounts on the Nintendo Switch if they had already used it with the PS4 — which is just downright insane anyway.

Sony will be conducting thorough testing throughout the course of the beta, to ensure that players’ experience with the game doesn’t degrade due to cross-play functionalities. The blog post mentions (and rightly so) that this is a huge change for their policies, and that Sony Interactive Entertainment is now in the planning process to support the change.

So, if you’ve been playing Fortnite on your PS4 and have been wishing for a way to play on your Nintendo Switch with the same account, or team up with your friends on other platforms, that is now possible! Rejoice!
