Netflix Download Limit: What Is It and How You Can Get Around It?

Netflix introduced its download feature for offline viewing back in 2016, allowing users to download content and watch it offline on the go. The feature has really caught on in the Indian market, with a number of daily commuters relying heavily on it to keep themselves entertained even when they don’t have access to the Internet. The feature also really comes in handy when you don’t have access to an unlimited data plan on your mobile device or in places where the WiFi charges are unjustifiably exorbitant (looking at you, luxury hotels). However, Netflix’s download feature has some limitations, something you might already be aware of in case you use the feature a whole lot. If you’re a heavy user who downloads a bunch of movies or TV shows, then you might have already encountered some download limit related errors on Netflix. So what exactly is the download limit on Netflix and how can you get around it? Read on to find out:

What’s the Netflix Download Limit?

While the platform allows users to download Netflix movies to watch offline, there’s a limit set in place which prohibits users from downloading too many movies or TV shows. According to a Netflix support page on the matter, a user can download a maximum of 100 titles of a single device at any given time, following which they will be greeted by an error that prevents them from downloading any more content on that device. Additionally, depending on the Netflix subscription plan you’re using, you’ll only be able to download titles on one, two or four devices at any given time.

The downloaded titles also have a set expiration time, but that varies from title to title depending on the licensing agreement Netflix has with the creator of that title. Users are only notified about an expiring download 7 days before the expiration date and in case any downloaded content is removed from the platform, the download expires immediately. But why does Netflix have a download limit to begin with? You’re already paying a subscription fee, so why does the platform limit you from downloading the content that you’ve already paid for? To answer that, lets take a look at Netflix’s policy on downloads.

Why Does Netflix Have a Download Limit?

In recent years, Netflix has invested heavily in original content and has created a strong library of movies, TV shows and documentaries, but the platform still has a lot of content which it licenses from other content creators. The download limit on Netflix is something that is controlled by these license holders and it varies from title to title. Netflix doesn’t reveal the download limit set on each title and users are only notified about the download limit when there’s just one final download left.

The download expiration of titles owned by other creators is also something set by the content creators themselves, and that too varies quite a bit from creator to creator. Which means that while some downloaded titles may not expire for weeks on end, some others might expire in just 48 hours. There’s no way to find out the exact expiration date for a title, which is definitely quite inconvenient, especially if you aren’t able to watch the title within the expiration limit, which will still count towards your total number of downloads.

Once you’ve expended the number of times you can download a particular title, you might have to wait a long while before you’re able to download the same title again, provided the content creator has a provision for that in their agreement with Netflix. Even though the same reason for limiting downloads shouldn’t be applicable on Netflix Originals, the platform doesn’t provide any clarification regarding why there’s a download limit on original content as well.

Common Netflix Download Limit Errors You Might Encounter

Since the platform isn’t upfront about its download limits there’s no way to know when you’ve exceeded a limit, until you get an error message when you’re trying to download Netflix shows. There are a couple of different errors you might encounter when you download Netflix movies to watch offline and you need to know what those errors mean before you can try to get around them. Here are some of the most common errors you might encounter while downloading Netflix content for offline viewing:

You have too many downloaded videos (Netflix error code:10016-22005)

According to Netflix, users can store a maximum of 100 unique titles on a single device at any given time. In case you exceed that download limit, which seems to be quite unlikely, you’ll see an error on your app which says that you have too many downloaded videos on your device. In order to download any more titles, you’ll need to delete older downloads from your device.

You have downloads on too many devices (Error code: 10016-23000)

Depending on your subscription plan, Netflix allows you to download content on one, two or four devices at any given time. If you try to download any more titles, an error message will pop up alerting you that you have downloads on too many devices. In order to continue downloading movies or TV shows on a new device, you’ll first have to delete all older downloads from another device or upgrade your subscription plan to support more devices.

You have reached the yearly download limit for this video (Error code: 10016-22007)

As mentioned earlier, Netflix can prevent you from downloading a single title more than a couple of times, with the number of downloads depending on the licensing agreement the platform has with the content creator. In case you download one particular file more than a couple of times, Netflix will alert you that you’ve reached the yearly download limit for that particular title. There’s no way to circumvent this download limit and you’ll have to wait for the stipulated time period before you can download the title again.

How You Can Resolve these Netflix Errors?

Now that you’re familiar with the most common download limit-related errors you might encounter on Netflix, lets take a look at how you can resolve the errors:

How to Fix Netflix’s “You Have Too Many Downloaded Videos” Error

If you’re trying to download a video and Netflix alerts you that you’ve already downloaded too many videos, you’ll need to delete older downloads before you can proceed with the current download. You can delete older downloads by navigating to the downloads section within the Netflix app on Android, iOS or Windows 10 and select the titles that you wish to download.


The platform also allows you to delete all previous downloads at once, to free up a significant amount of space which will then give you the opportunity to download several titles all at once. How to Fix Netflix’s “You have downloads on too many devices” Error

If you encounter the ‘You have downloads on too many devices’ error, you’ll need to delete all the downloads from an older device in order to start downloading on a new device. You can follow the same method mentioned above to delete all downloads from an older device, but in case you don’t have access to the device, you can follow these steps to remove downloads from the older device:


  • Open your Netflix account in your browser, hover your mouse on the profile icon in the top right corner and click on the ‘Account’ option in the drop down menu

  • Click on the ‘Manage download devices’ option under ‘Settings’ and you’ll be redirected to a page which lists all your connected devices that have downloaded content

  • Remove the older device from the list by clicking on the ‘Remove device’ button under the corresponding device

Your older device and all of the downloaded videos on the device should now be removed, allowing you to download more titles on your new device.

Use Netflix Smart Downloads to Manage Downloaded Content

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of maintaining the downloaded videos on your devices, you can make use of the Netflix Smart Downloads feature. The feature, which was released for Android devices earlier this year, automatically downloads the next episode (only if you’re connected to WiFi) in a series that you’re watching, while also deleting the episodes that you’ve already watched.

The feature is only available on Android devices and as you’d expect, it only works with TV shows. You can enable the Smart Downloads feature on your Android device by heading to the Downloads tab and tapping on the Smart Downloads option in the top left corner. Do note that the Smart Downloads feature will only work if there are additional episodes to download in your series, in case there aren’t any episodes left, the last watched episode won’t be deleted.

Watch Netflix Offline Without Worrying About Download Limits

Armed with all the aforementioned information, you shouldn’t face any issues with any limits on downloading videos and movies from Netflix. However, you’ll still need to be careful about the number of times you download a particular title or you might have to wait a full year before you’re able to download it again.   1. Well, I can see from the messages dating back 2 years ago that Netflix has not addressed this problem. 100 downloads is what I am paying for. I continue to get pop ups telling me I am over my limit at 25. I have limited internet access and can go days without it. I am disabled and I binge watch programs. I wish Netflix provided the service advertised that I am paying for.

  2. I don’t have phone service so I download as many episodes advised can but when I try to download more than one season it won’t let me. If I can get a 100 titles I should be able to download a hundred episodes of the same show. Please fix. I’m shore I’m not the only one

  3. I m watching a multi season show. I have no internet at home. I m paying for the maximum subscription . Netflix is complaining that i have too many downloads… I have one device, one profile, 3 downloads, each about 45 minutes long. 800+ gb of storage, and I cant stand to rewatch the same episodes ergo they get deleted almost as soon as they re watched . According to it s policy, I can supposedly have up to 100 downloads. Can someone explain why the facts are contradicting each other ? Thx 😀

    1. Netflix should fix the problem of 100 download limit by exceeding it at least to 3 times.. Also re-downloading an episode many times shouldn’t be a problem to be worried about and should be put into consideration.

  4. I love the download feature but now I’m getting a message that I have too many downloads on my phone, when I only have one! I cleared the cache, updated the app and I’m still getting the same message.
    I don’t have internet at home and download on wifi whenever it’s available elsewhere, so this feature is very useful, but it doesn’t seem to be working anymore! Any tips?

    1. I keep having the same problem! I use to be able to download soooooo many things, but now its only letting me keep 14 one hour long episodes….

  6. It kept giving me an error saying I had to many downloads on my device. I removed 5 episodes off the end of my list of The Magicians, and it still wouldnt let me download the 1 episode it skipped on downloading from the previous season. No matter how many I removed for the list, it wouldnt let me add the one. Had to go into settings>apps>Netflix and clear the cache. That fixed the issue.

  7. I prefer the downlosds because I travel alot and don’t always have access to WiFi and phone network is usually bad streaming, I would like it if you could make the download limit more than 100 per year. You should be able to cater for people like us

  8. I believe Netflix is doing the right thing. If people are downloading that many shows, it stands to prove they are not watching them regularly or they would not be staying at the same number of movies, or TV shows. If and when I download, I plan on watching them in the very near future! Keep up the good work Netflix, I appreciate the fact that I am able to download anything at all, and to be able to watch them offline is a huge plus for me! Thank you!

    1. Some people binge watch the whole season is 2 days . So it’s not like they are holding on to them . Also they expire . So it’s not like they sit on a device for eternity . My boyfriend down loaded one season . Watched it in 2 days and deleted it . Now he’s trying to down load the next season and it says he’s got to many downloads after only 9 episodes .

  9. Definitely disappointing! Why the limitation? Makes it very difficult to watch series from beginning to end! Leaves one with a sense of incompleteness and frustration when you’re not around connectivity. Please review this!

Being someone from a place where the only reliable source of internet is a data based connection that is quite costly and want to rewatch a lot of shows every few months or so, netflix removing the download limits would be a really good thing. I’m already paying for the subscription, and also a lot for the data charges since good quality videos take a lot of data but due to this download limit, I would be forced to delete the videos that I already watched even if I would want to rewatch them later on… This makes me think of just stopping my subscription and just use other ways to download and watch… I hope Netflix manages to remove these limitations to help people like us.

  11. Worse issue: I downloaded in Feb. 2020 100 titles on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S, Android 6.0 When I tried to delete 1 & download another title, I couldn’t. Netflix explained that I would have to delete ALL 100 titles in order to download the next episode of a series. They didn’t say it was because the Android version was old.

  13. I only have 3 episodes downloaded and un watched AND it says I’m at my limit although in the past I have had multiple seasons on my downloaded at once.

  14. Although I can see why limitations are set, I find it hard to digest you pay for something supposedly allowing access to content to find there are limitations restricting you. Also, I downloaded quite some episodes of Money Heist as I was travelling to a country with doubtfull internet, to find out all files were not accessible. I had to delete all and watch all online. Anyway, room for improvement, I would say.

  15. Very disappointed!!! I dont have internet at home, and i thought downloads would be the solution to watching my favorite shows that are not available on DVD. First i learned that i cant watch the downloads through my smart TV so the whole family huddles in front of the laptop. Second, I downloaded several episodes of one show since i wouldnt by going near a connection for awhile. I didnt get a chance to watch all of them in the 48 hours before they expired, and now i cant download them again for a year! Very worthless service for me. I will definately cancel.

      1. That’s untrue. Smart download only controls whether it automatically downloads new episodes and deletes watched ones. There’s no way to disable the ridiculous limits.
