This Month’s Android Distribution Numbers Show Oreo Running on 5.7% of All Devices

OnePlus 5 and 5T Oreo Update Featured

Google has updated its developer dashboard with the latest Android platform distribution numbers. The world’s largest mobile operating system continues to remain highly-fragmented with the latest stable version Android Oreo only running on 5.7 percent of all devices globally. That, however, is still an increase over last month, when it accounted for just 4.6 percent of all Android installations.

The report also reveals that Android Nougat continues to remain the largest major Android version by distribution with 31.1 percent market share (APIs 24 and 25 combined), which is slightly more than the 30.8 percent it held in April. Marshmallow comes in at number three with 25.5 percent share of the market, while Lollipop is at number four with 22.4 percent. The data, Google says, was collected during a 7-day period ending on May 7.

Of course there are still millions of devices around the world using long-deprecated versions of Android, going as far back as Gingerbread. According to the report, 0.3 percent of all Android users are still stuck on Android 2.3, while Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) accounts for 0.4 percent of all users. Three Jelly Bean distros combined (4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) make up around 4.5 percent of all Android users, while KitKat has 10.3 percent of the market.

As Android vendors continue to struggle with timely software updates, it will be interesting to see whether the opening up of the Android Beta program to more manufacturers will have an impact on the Android P adoption at this time next year. If that’s the case then Google may have finally solved Android’s biggest problem.
