How to Open Control Center on Apple Watch in watchOS 10

So, you updated your Apple Watch to the latest watchOS 10 update, and are now puzzled about how to open the Control Center as the old swipe-up method is not working? Well, you are not alone. With watchOS 10, Apple has transformed the way you interact with your Apple Watch. watchOS 10 packs many new exciting features to offer a whole new user experience, like widgets in the smart stack, apps using the entire display to create space for new content, and more. So, the gesture to open the Control Center has changed, and this post details how to access the Control Center on the Apple Watch in watchOS 10.

How to Access the Control Center in watchOS 10

Ever since Apple introduced the first Apple Watch, the way we largely interact with the watch has more or less remained the same. Even after the addition of so many new features, the overall user interface stayed consistent. But watchOS 10 brings a major change!

On an Apple Watch running watchOS 9 or below, you can quickly open the Control Center by swiping up on the screen. However, with the watchOS 10 update, the swipe-up gesture pulls up the all-new widgets smart stack instead of the Control Center. So the big question is how to open the Control Center on Apple Watch in WatchOS 10. Here’s the answer:

Unlock your Apple Watch using the passcode (if you have set one) and then press the side button to open the Control Center. Yeah, it is that simple now.

How to Access the App Switcher in watchOS 10

Now that you know that the side button on your Apple Watch brings up the Control Center in watchOS 10. You must be wondering how to access the app switcher on Apple Watch. Earlier, a press of the side button opened the app switcher, but that functionality has now moved to the Digital Crown. Here’s how it works:

Simply double press the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch to open App Switcher in watchOS 10. And that’s our quick guide on how to navigate the Apple Watch after the watchOS 10 update. Does this change feel unnecessary, and are widgets worth it? Let us know in the comments below.

This is the worst! Please switch it back.

  • Margaret Byrd says:

To say I HATE what you have done is the understatement of the year!!! I will never buy another Apple Watch and tell everyone I know the same thing. You have made a TERRIBLE MISTAKE!!! It was so easy and quick and you’ve totally gone the other way with this awful change.

  • Stacy says:

This latest update is TERRIBLE! Why do I need widgets? Why when I swipe up do I need to see the time and date again that I just saw on my watch face? Put back the swipe up for the control center! Who keeps coming up with these constant ridiculous changes?! Becoming very frustrated and unhappy with Apple products

  • Red_Gin_Sin says:

Yep I’m the same being back the swipe up geature please!

    • Janice says:

I get upset every time you do a update. You make things harder like the control center now on Apple Watch. It is very difficult to press in the side button. Please bring back the swipe up or down. Stop changing the settings.

  • Dee Harris says:

I just got my watch a couple months ago and I am just getting used to it. The swipe up was the best thing on it for learning. It’s about the only thing I have figured out. Please bring it back. I keep getting a dead battery because I don’t know how much is left. Ahhh!!!

  • Glenda says:

Please bring back the swip up control centre. Spent over an hour trying to find how to do it after update This was not a good idea

  • amer says:

I can’t push the side button easy. please bring back the swipe for control center.

totally agree with all these comments:~
    a) if you’re going to make fundamental changes like this it would be helpful to explain them
    b) don’t make changes that don’t improve the functionality. Swiping up for control centre is so much better – side button is a very poor swap.

Glad to know I was not the only one having problems with the new and improved changes 😞. As indicated in one of the comments above, Siri will bring up the control center. If you are able to press the side button press it once and quickly release for the control center. If you press the button for a few seconds then the emergency screen shows up. It would have been very customer friendly for apple to send a link with the update providing all the new ways to use your phone. Maybe I missed it?

  • Mike says:

    Bring back the swipe please!!!

  • Vasu Subramanian says:

Please bring back the SWIPE. I had no idea this was changed and no documentation that said so.

  • Elaine says:

I agree with all the above comments. I’ve just spent a whole hour trying to find the control centre!! Really wish apple would let us know vital things like moving the control centre without telling us. Some of us don’t want to interact with our phones and explore the functions. I just want it to work!!! What a frustrating last hour. I’m ready to throw it out of the window!!!!!

  • Sandy says:

This version of Apple Watch is a disaster. The side button does not bring up Control Center. Nothing is where it should be and it is extremely difficult to determine where to find anything to customize. I am about ready to scrap Apple.

  • S White says:

My side button doesn’t bring up anything and Siri just says I don’t have an app called Control Center. This new button feature is HORRIBLE!!! I use a protective cover which also makes reaching the button very difficult. I can’t even find out to cycle my watch off or reach my SOS alert! I would not have done the update if I’d known these changes were happening, I just might be looking for a different watch if these things don’t change, functionality is more important than a “brand”, VERY disappointed Apple, big fail on this one for me.

  • Barb says:

Or just ask Siri to open control center. It works

    • Leila Kight says:

That works… Thank you. I tried asking Siri to ping my phone, but she doesn’t seem to be able to find it., even when it’s in the same hand as my Apple Watch arm.

  • Linda Furman-Echeagaray says:

Why did you change the set up on my phone? I cannot use anything. I need the control center. There’s so many things on there that I use on a daily daily daily and now I can’t do anything. I really do not appreciate y’all messing with my stuff.

  • Charlotte Rickert says:

I hate using the side button to get to the control center. I have neuropathy in my fingers from chemo and I can’t feel the button and it’s what I use most on my watch ( find my phone) . My watch feels useless now!!! Help!!!

  • Diane says:

I have arthritis in my fingers and pushing a button is difficult to painful. Give us an option to swipe instead!

    • Chantel says:

Super annoying switch. I loved the swipe feature versus pushing the awkward button for control center. I use control center frequently to silence during work and find where my kids hid my phone. Give us options!

  • Kay Campbell says:

I agree with other reviews. Please bring back the swipe’ for control center.

  • Marilee Greene says:

I want to swipe up on my Apple Watch to get my
Control center. I hate the new way. Bring back the swipe!!!!

  • Arcede says:

Bring back the swipe up for control center please!
I dont want to push a button for that.
I dont use any of the functions that are now brought up by swipe up.
    What a terrible change!

  • Frances says:

Preferred old control centre. Can’t turn off sound or find phone as easy as before. Also can’t easily check WiFi. Please bring back the easy access to control centre!
