- GTA 6's dynamic weather system is going to be more realistic than ever in the franchise.
- It will have localized weather, where when rain happens in one area, the other part of the city can keep its sunny face.
- Distant lightning strikes will also be visible in the game.
GTA 6 is not only the most hyped game of this decade, but it is also trying to bring a sense of realism previously unfound in the franchise. Although there are multiple examples of such realistic features, the new weather system truly stands apart. Here is everything you need to know about the GTA 6 weather system.
All Confirmed GTA 6 Weather Types

As of yet, four weather types have been confirmed to be in GTA 6. These systems are as follows.
- Sunny
- Rainy
- Tropical storms
- Hurricane
There might be more weather conditions, but these are the main ones revealed in the new Game Informer GTA 6 cover story. If you want to learn more about the weather system, then check the section below.
How Does the Weather System Work in GTA 6?
According to the developers, the weather system in GTA 6 is not just for show. In the massive GTA 6 map, rain actually drenches NPCs and the surrounding areas. Players will find small puddles of water near lamp posts and around street corners. Other than that, the weather system will also be localized. If it is raining in one place, it could be sunny somewhere else.
Also, players will be able to see distant lightning, helping them realize where a storm might be localized.
“We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent, and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before,” Tom Shepherd, co-studio head and technical director at Rockstar San Diego, says. This is also what GTA 6 criminal profile hopes to achieve, but for the game’s wanted system.
“The world features new fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map; these give us a broad spectrum of weather from the clear blue skies of a Miami winter to the vertiginous cumulonimbus clouds with sporadic lightning that you see most afternoons in the Floridian summer and autumn.”
Leonida itself can have localized rain showers, while another place remains a gorgeously sunny zone. The rains will also create realistic rainbows under the right lighting conditions, making it all a bit more cinematic.
The developers also touch on how hair and debris will swirl around on rooftops, while gusts of wind will ripple the water’s surface or even bend grass in swamps.
