The previous episode of Severance Season 2 was filled with thrill and revelations. Irving figured out that Helly was her outie, Helena Eagan, and had been spying on the MDR department. However, when no one believed Irving, he took drastic measures to reveal the truth, resulting in him getting fired. At that point, a lot of us might have thought that we would not get to see Irving anymore but as it turns out, he did appear in Severance Season 2 Episode 5, and here is a complete recap of all the major things that happened in the latest episode!
The Whistling Man and Helena Eagan
Season 2 Episode 5 of Severance begins with a man dragging a cart through the hallways of Lumon’s severed office. He is also whistling “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” and as he reaches Optics & Designs, he collects a full tray of dental picks from Felicia and her coworker. He then proceeds to leave O&D and makes his way to a dark alleyway leading to an elevator with a red arrow pointing downwards, the same as the drawings made by Irving. At Mark’s house, Reghabi is staying with him and is monitoring his reintegration.
On the other hand, Helena is having a meeting with Drummond and Natalie where they discuss the fact that Helena was nearly killed by drowning at the hands of Irving. Helena inquires if her father knows about it and to her relief, he has not been told of this incident. Drummond and Natalie ask Helena to go back to the Severed floor but as her innie and even though she is reluctant about it, they tell her that Mark is close to completing the Cold Harbor files and they need Helly to be there so he keeps working.
Helly’s Return To The Severed Floor
Helly returns to the Severed Floor and is extremely confused about what is happening. Miss Huang takes Helly to Mr. Milchick’s office where Mark and Dylan already are. Dylan tells Helly what has happened and she is angered by it. Mr. Milchick explains that Helena was down here as Helly so that she could research how to make things better for the Severed employees.
Dylan further asks Milchick questions about Irving’s whereabouts and gets to know that Irving has been permanently dismissed or fired because he attempted to drown Helena Eagan. Even though this time around, it’s really Helly R., a deep mistrust gets rooted within Dylan and Mark and both of them are not able to believe that it’s really Helly. Mr. Milchick takes the three of them to their office and that’s when Dylan demands to hold a funeral for Irving to which, Milchick agrees.
Irving’s Funeral
Miss Huang and Milchick host a funeral for Irving. We see that there are mugs with Irving’s face and an 8-bit animation of him in the background. After holding their silence for 9 seconds, Dylan is called upon to say a eulogy for Irving which he does rather wonderfully, and by the end of it, admits that he is guilty for not taking Irving’s side when he told Dylan the truth about Helly.
Then, a cart comes in with a Watermelon cut out in the shape of Irving’s head but Mark does not stay long and goes off to work saying that Irving is not dead and is just not there. Helly follows Mark to talk to him and Dylan stays behind. He then looked at the wall where a “Hang in There!” poster was hung and as he investigated it, Dylan found a note with the directions to the mysterious elevator with a drawing of the same on it.
At the same time, Michick goes through a performance review where he is questioned about how he used paperclips and is told that his kindness reforms should not continue. He was also questioned about what happened at the outing he organized for the MDR team. Hearing this, Michick promised that he would tighten the leash on his team.
Irving and Burt Meet Again
Irving once again walks to the phone booth and calls someone. However, before he can start his conversation, he sees Burt and goes over to his car to ask why he is following him. Burt tells him that he saw Irving the night he came to his door and because of this, things have gone bad between Burt and his husband. So, to clear out misunderstandings, Burt invited Irving to have dinner with him and his husband which we might get to see in the next episode.
