- X-Men '97 shows us a budding romance between Magneto and Rogue.
- A similar event was seen in the comic line of "Utopia" which might be where the series is led.
- X-Men '97 is available to stream on Disney+.
X-Men’97 was released yesterday with a two-episode premiere and as it turns out, the hype for this one paid out well. The first two episodes were really well done with great pacing and set up what seems to be a well-thought-out story. However, after watching the second episode, we as an audience were left with the sense of a much deeper relationship between Magneto and Rogue. Now the question is, where will this spark lead to? I’m happy to tell you that Marvel Comics and X-Men: The Animated Series hold answers to this question. Here’s how X-Men ’97 could be setting up for Rogue and Magneto for the upcoming episodes!
What Is the History of Rogue and Magneto?
Okay, so before we talk about the future, let’s get to know a bit about the past Magneto and Rogue share. Rogue was introduced in the X-Men comic universe with the Uncanny X-Men #171 in 1983 and became a part of the team. During her missions across comics, she encountered Magneto on multiple accounts but was fighting against him along with the X-Men.
However, that changed in the year 1991 with the release of Uncanny X-Men #274. In this comic, Rogue lost her powers and joined Magneto in his mission of creating a Mutant eutopia out of Savage Land.
Now since Rogue does not have her powers, she can touch Magneto and their partnership turns into a brief romantic fling. But that didn’t last long since Rogue witnesses Magneto killing Zaladane and she leaves him after that. However, this is not the only plotline where Magneto and Rogue develop a romantic relationship. We have seen instances of them dating each other in the comic lines of Age of Apocalypse and an alternate timeline plot called Age of X. So, it seems that X-Men ’97 might take a step towards one of these storylines.
How Can Rogue and Magneto Touch Each Other in X-Men ’97?
The biggest question that popped into my mind while watching X-Men ’97 was how did Rogue touch Magneto without losing her powers. So, I hopped onto my laptop and did some research and what I found out was quite interesting.
There are a couple of theories on how that happens. The first and most well-known is that when Magneto touches Rogue, he creates a magnetic force field around him so he is touching her, but also, technically, not touching-touching her.
However, this is just a theory but there’s another reason why which makes much more sense and is kinda proven by events we have seen in X-Men comics.
In the Age of Apocalypse Rogue permanently absorbs magnetic powers from Polaris. Now, since Rogue and Magneto both possess magnetic powers, when they touch each other, they cancel out each other’s powers allowing Magneto to stay unaffected.
Rogue and Magneto: Possible Future in X-Men ’97
Now the big question is, where could this budding romance lead Magneto and Rogue in the future of X-Men? There are some theories about it. In the two X-Men ’97 episodes that have premiered so far, it is shown that Magneto has had a change of heart and is now the leader of X-Men. We know that Magneto plans to send mutants to a haven on an island called Genosha. This event suggests that maybe X-Men ’97 is going to show us their version of the Utopia storyline.
As of now, we have not seen any evidence for the inclusion of Savage Land but we might get to see it as well with the way things are going. Now, we can’t say anything for sure because we have just seen two episodes from the series so I would recommend you folks to stick with us while we keep you updated with everything new we find out with the upcoming episodes!
