11. Deadshot

Deadshot

More popularly known to be a member of the Suicide Squad, Deadshot debuted in Batman#59 as a Batman villain who is a master of firearms and is known as the man who never misses. Deadshot is not exactly a traditional villain and he shares some sort of respect for Batman and vice versa. Since Deadshot ultimately is a gun for hire and kills people, Batman can never accept this because of his moral code.

Batman and Deadshot have stood against each other multiple times and Batman always had the upper hand over Deadshot. Since Deadshot does what he does to take care of his daughter, Batman generally goes easy on him and tries to rehabilitate him.

10. Scarecrow

Johnathan Crane, or Scarecrow, who is an ex Professor of Psychology, developed a toxin called the fear gas. It was used to make his victims hallucinate and witness their greatest fear. Unlike most Batman villains, except Joker, who do what they do for money, Scarecrow deploys his toxin more as a form of some twisted research.

Only a few people, Batman being one of them, were able to fight the effects of the fear gas. But most of those who were not able to were driven insane and committed heinous crimes. Scarecrow made his first appearance in World’s Finest Comics #3 (September 1941) and has since been a reappearing villain in Batman comics. He is easily one of the greatest villains Batman has ever faced. Scarecrow has made his appearance in Arkham games as well as in Injustice games.

9. Black Mask

Originally known as Roman Sionis, Black Mask was born into a rich family. When he was born, the doctor accidentally dropped him on his head, which caused some sort of mental damage. As far as his parents are concerned, they cared way more about their wealth as compared to their own children. Thus, it developed a deep resentment in Roman’s heart for his parents. He acquired a liking for masks and used to mimic his parent’s behaviors wearing them. Later on, Roman burnt down his family home killing both his parents.

Roman dug up his father’s grave and carved a mask out of his coffin. Thus, taking up the identity of the crime boss, Black Mask. While most of the Batman villains are either twisted or crazy, Black Mask has rather old-school sadist ways and is extremely fond of pulling the trigger whenever he can. Black Mask was never able to hurt Batman a lot physically but was sure able to give him a hard time mentally.

8. Ra’s al Ghul

Ra’s al Ghul is the founder of the League of Assasins whose sole aim is to rid the world of all evil by hook or crook. This group consists of deadly and highly trained assassins. Even though their aim seems to be noble, their ways are extremely violent and often include a lot of civilian and innocent casualties making Ra’s al Ghul a sworn enemy of Batman.

Later on in the comics, Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter Talia’s child becomes Robin but despite this, Ra’s al Ghul won’t hesitate to kill Batman any day

7. Clayface

Every superhero ever created has at least one shape-shifting villain and when it comes to the Dark Knight, it’s Clayface. Clayface is a gigantic monster who looks as if he’s made out of clay living up to his name. He can take up the shape of anyone he chooses and since he’s made literally out of a clay-like substance, it is almost impossible to attack him physically.

Even though being a shapeshifter, he made Batman go through a lot of trouble but since his weakness is something as basic as water or sub-zero temperatures, Batman eventually defeated and captured him.

6. Carmine Falcone

Gaining popularity after the release of The Batman (2022), a lot of people tend to think of Carmine Falcone as a newer villain but in truth, he has been a dangerous adversary to Batman since the 1980’s. Carmine Falcone was the perfect villain for this movie. It is because Robert Pattinson’s Batman is the same age as he was in the Batman Year One comic series where Falcone made his debut.

This Batman villain is highly iconic as we see in The Batman, Carmine Falcone was the one responsible for the death of Bruce’s parents, the reason he became Batman.

5. The Penguin

One of the oldest villains in Batman’s universe is The Penguin, born in the Cobblepot family to Tucker and Esther Cobblepot. He was never loved by his father or his brothers, which eventually drove him to kill the three of them. As he grew up, he became a Gotham crime lord.

Penguin’s forte was dealing weapons but Batman always foiled his plans. Batman has defeated and captured Penguin countless times in the comics. One of the most iconic cinematic depictions of the Penguin was in Batman Returns (1992) played by Danny DeVito.

4. Harley Quinn

Making her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn was supposed to be just a one-time appearance as one of the Joker’s sidekicks. This one-time run was sufficient to make Harley Quinn a fan favorite and because of that, this bubbly killer stayed in the DC universe. She gained even more popularity after Margot Robbie brought her to life in Suicide Squad (2016).

Harley Quinn is one of those Batman villains who cause a nuisance by being a counterpart in Joker’s plans against Batman and Gotham City. Whenever Joker plans anything against the city, Batman usually captures Harley Quinn to question her about these plans. She’s one of those villains who has a good side to her as well and Batman knows that she’s just brainwashed, the reason why he’s always trying to rehabilitate her.

3. Deathstroke

Deathstroke is one of those Batman Villains who is actually able to defeat the superhero in multiple standoffs. Even though he started out as a villain for Teen Titans, Deathstroke soon became one of the most notable rivals of Batman. Slade Wilson is the result of a failed super-soldier experiment, hence, granting him his superhuman agility and stamina.

If we talk about the rivalry between Deathstroke and Batman, Deathstroke doesn’t have anything personal against Batman. He usually goes after Batman when someone pays him to do so or he is seeking revenge for a previous defeat. Deathstroke is a fierce and merciless gun for hire and his tactical as well as combat skills are a match to that of Batman. This has helped him in being able to defeat heroes like Flash as well.

2. Bane

Bane is one of the darkest villains to exist in Batman’s life and he’s considered to be one of those villains, who not only scarred Batman physically but also emotionally. The villain grew up in a prison that was no less than an asylum. He spent his youth killing people with a knife hidden in a teddy bear. He was forcefully chosen for a super soldier program in which he nearly died. Bane was given a serum known in DC as “Venom” and he got permanently hooked on it. This serum is what grants Bane his superhuman, titan-like strength.

Bane has not just been a villain to Batman but a nemesis for a long period of time. He is the one who broke Batman’s back in the Batman: Knightfall comic series, scarring Batman physically for a period of time. But you know what they say, physical wounds heal but emotional wounds don’t. Bane upon discovering the true identity of Batman as Bruce Wayne, knocked him unconscious and buried him in his father’s coffin.

Bane is a Batman villain who doesn’t only wish to defeat the superhero but his ultimate aim is to “break the bat” both physically and mentally.

1. The Joker

Every hero who plays the role of a detective has that one arch nemesis, who is so twisted that it gets scary after a point. And if we are talking about the world’s greatest detective, his arch nemesis should also be the world’s greatest twisted mind. Living up to that expectation with flying colors, here comes the Joker. There is no specific origin story for the Joker as whenever he explains his origin, it’s always a different story.

In a list of all Batman villains, no one can top the Joker because while others try to break Batman emotionally and physically, Joker has succeded in doing so multiple times; deeply traumatizing Batman. He killed Gordon, crippled Barbara, beat Jason Todd to death with a crowbar, Jokerised Tim Drake, and whatnot. He was the one who caused the complete Injustice storyline and created the Batman Who Laughs in an alternate universe. If Joker is not the greatest nemesis of Batman, I don’t know who else could deserve that spot.
