Of course, a character like Gojo can’t rot in a prison realm, so when and how will Gojo be unsealed in the story? Will Gojo Be Unsealed in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3?
With how things stand, there is a high possibility that Gojo Satoru might be unsealed in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. Let me break it down for you. It took around 3 years and 130 chapters in the manga to finally see Gojo get unsealed from the Prison Realm.
Right after the Shibuya Incident arc, we have Itadori’s Extermination Arc (chapters 137-143) and Perfect Preparation Arc (chapters 144-158). These are mini-arcs that are being adapted in the first half of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. But up next, we have the longest arc called the Culling Game Arc (chapters 159-221), and we see our beloved Gojo sensei back in action only at the climax of this arc.
There are 85 chapters more to be adapted until Gojo’s unsealing at the moment. JJK season 1 adapted 63 chapters into 24 episodes, and season 2 adapted 73 chapters into 23 episodes. Now, MAPPA Studios can adapt these 85 chapters into 24 episodes for JJK season 3, but it’s a herculean task adapting 3.5 chapters per episode.
Since the Culling Game arc is full of fight sequences, the animators can squeeze more chapter content into each episode, similar to how Solo Leveling Season 2 did everything to wrap up the Jeju Island Arc in the anime. If they can keep up the pace this way, then we might get to see Gojo getting unsealed in the final episode of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 in 2026.
However, if things don’t play out as we predicted, then Gojo will break free from the Prison Realm only in Jujutsu Kaisen season 4, the final season of the series. It is because there is another great cliffhanger moment in the Culling Game arc, where JJK season 3 could potentially end. So, although we are waiting with bated breath for Gojo’s comeback in JJK, let’s be patient until we can get a clear picture after the third season makes some good progress this year.
Why Did Kenjaku Seal Gojo?
In case you don’t remember, here is a quick recap of how Gojo got sealed in the first place. The only massive obstacle in Kenjaku’s path to merge was Gojo, as he could easily thwart all of the evil genius’s plans. So, Kenjaku came up with a brilliant plan to lock away Gojo Satoru in the Prison Realm in Jujutsu Kaisen.
He opened the prison realm to seal him, but there was a difficult condition he needed to fulfill. That is, the person (to be sealed) should be within a four-meter radius for around one minute. Now, it is a big feat to pull off, as you can’t keep the Sorcerer Supreme distracted for a minute.
But Kenjaku, in the form of Geto Suguru (Pseudo-Geto), revealed himself for the first time in front of Gojo. Gojo was shocked to see his late best friend back alive in the flesh. For those unaware, Gojo is the one who dealt the final blow to his friend, and we have already covered in detail the meaning of Gojo’s last words to Geto in Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s ending.
As a result, Gojo was bewildered, and the flashbacks with his best friend rushed through his mind for a minute. That was more than enough for Kenjaku to capture him using the Prison Realm. And that is how Kenjaku ultimately managed to capture Gojo in the first place.
And well, the JJK fan community has been keeping count ever since. Gojo was sealed in the manga for over 1189 days and 845 days in the anime. The time flew by fast for the manga readers, and Gojo indeed got unsealed in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. When Does Gojo Get Unsealed in Jujutsu Kaisen?
After a long period of nothing in store for Gojo fans, JJK Chapter 220 finally teased Gojo’s comeback. But we didn’t expect that to happen in the very next Chapter 221 itself. After a 3-year-long wait, Gojo was finally unsealed from the prison realm in JJK chapter 221 with the help of Angel Hana Kurusu.
Hana Kurusu used her Angel’s curse technique, Jacob’s ladder, to open the back gate of the prison realm. After Gojo was released, he didn’t waste any time and went straight to where Kenjaku and Sukuna were, leaving the sorcerers who released him confused. When Kenjaku found out that Gojo escaped in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 221, he was perplexed about how in the world he pulled it off after the back of the Prison Realm was absorbed.
What Does Gojo Do After He Gets Unsealed?
Even after being stuck inside the prison realm for 19 days (as per the manga timeline), Gojo’s confidence is still on another level. Gojo established his supremacy by terrorizing Kenjaku and dissing Sukuna as if they were nothing.
He then punched Uraume in the gut when she tried a sneak attack. In the final panels of the chapter, Gojo remarks on something he said in the past to Itadori Yuji. Back in the first season, Itadori once asked Gojo who was stronger between him and Sukuna.
Gojo remarked that if Sukuna ate all his fingers and gained his full power, it might be a little tough for him to defeat the King of Curses. Then, Itadori in return asked, would you lose?, to which Gojo replied, “Nah, I’d win.” The same lines are uttered by Gojo at the end of JJK chapter 221 and make for an amazing throwback to the initial chapters.
After Gojo was released in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 221, he had a bigger mess to clean up with a clash against the mightiest opponents. And the highly anticipated Gojo vs Sukuna battle kick-started after this comeback chapter. Fans have gone wild after witnessing our Gojo sensei coming back for real. It’s hilarious to think how Gojo was imprisoned in the prison realm only for 19 days (as per the manga timeline), yet we had to wait nearly three years to see him again. Shocking, isn’t it? Now we have to wait even more to see him back in anime.
Nonetheless, Gojo sensei hadn’t lost his charisma even after being trapped in the prison realm. He was the same charming and cocky jujutsu sorcerer he was before, complete with a bone-chilling aura, his humor and poking fun at enemies, and his confidence. The legendary battle between Gojo and Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen also concluded in the manga, and you wouldn’t know how it went down.
