While James Gunn has officially stated that the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is now over, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman 2 is going to be like the last glimpse of DCEU for all DC fans. The movie seems to pick up from where the first Aquaman movie ended but as far as we think, the Aquaman 2 cast has been affected drastically due Amber Heard- Johnny Depp controversy.
Other than this factor, this movie has been in anticipation for quite some time and it’s finally around the corner. Since there are high hopes for Aquaman 2, we don’t want you guys to miss out on any details that follow it. So, in this article, let’s find out all we know about Aquaman 2 aka Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Aquaman 2 Release Date
Aquaman 2 is given a US release date of 20 December 2023 but quite strangely, it is being said that the movie will be released in the UK on 29 December 2023. If it is true, this is a bizarre move since the gap between both release dates is significant. Anyway, Aquaman 2 was originally set to be released on December 16, 2022, but was then pushed back to 17 March, 2023 to refine and complete the VFX of the movie.
Later on, the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard court case broke out, due to which the creators of the movie had to perform certain reshoots. It was later pushed back even further with a final release date of 20 December 2023.
Aquaman 2 Cast List
A short teaser for the upcoming Aquaman 2 movie was posted on YouTube by DC Studios on 11 September 2023. In the description of that teaser, we see the mention of all the cast members in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom:
“All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.“
And yes, I know, Amber Heard is still there, but as far as we know, her screen time has been reduced to just 8 minutes. Other than that, the complete cast of the movie remains the same as the first Aquaman movie. Check out the list of characters and cast members here:
- Aquaman/Arthur Curry – Jason Momoa
- Orm – Patrick Wilson
- Mera – Amber Heard
- Black Manta – Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
- Atlanna – Nicole Kidman
- King Nereus – Dolp Lundgren
- Dr. Stephen Shin – Randall Park
Aquaman 2 Trailers
The first official Aquaman 2 trailer was released on 14 September 2023, and guys, this trailer has given me some serious hope about this movie. The trailer shows us the return of the Black Manta but in a much more sinister form, wielding a black trident. This trailer made it quite obvious that this movie is really well made, the VFX, the cinematography, and even the way the color grading has been done on this movie seem to be done with utmost excellence.
Personally, this trailer got me hyped up for 20th December, and I can’t wait to see Aquaman and Black Manta engaging in an epic battle. But what about you guys? Are you as hyped as I am? Let me know your thoughts on the trailer in the comments below.
Aquaman 2 Plot
Aquaman 2 seems to pick up exactly from where the first Aquaman movie ended. Black Manta was defeated by Aquaman and, well, he is one sore loser. In Aquaman 2, Black Manta is back to finish his task of avenging his father and intends to take away everything Aquaman holds dear to him. However, this time, Black Manta wields a weapon of mass destruction, a dark weapon called the Black Trident.
Aquaman certainly can’t take on such a powerful enemy on his own so he seeks the assistance of his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis. Together, they both take a stand against Black Manta as the last line of defense to protect everything that’s close to them and to save the world.
Now, I’m not going to lie, that plot does look intriguing and seems to be your average superhero movie plot and nothing very exceptional. The defining factor for this movie is going to be its visuals and by the looks of it, the developers are very well aware of this.
The special thing about this movie is the fact that this is officially the last DCEU movie and is going to act as a farewell to Henry Cavill’s Superman who has been rebooted in Superman: Legacy, Ben Afflick’s Batman who was easily one of the best Batman actors and a lot of other characters we fell in love with. So guys, let’s treat this movie well and see you in your nearest theaters!
